Moss: Cosmetic or Damaging?

One of the most common questions we get this time of year in Oregon:

“Is the moss on my roof actually hurting anything, or does it just look bad?”

Truthfully, a little moss usually isn’t the end of the world if it’s dealt with early. But once it starts getting thick, it can trap moisture, slow drainage, and wear roofs out faster over time, especially on those shady north-facing slopes that never seem to dry out around here.

The goal for most homeowners should really just be routine maintenance and getting the full life out of their roof. Otherwise, the alternative is usually ignoring it and ending up replacing the roof sooner than you probably needed to.

Most roof problems don’t happen overnight around here. They happen one wet Oregon season at a time 🌧️

This time of year is honestly a good reminder to:
✔️ Clean the gutters
✔️ Knock moss back before summer
✔️ Keep an eye out for small issues while they’re still small

And sometimes it’s less serious than people think. Sometimes it’s not. Either way, we’re always happy to give a straight answer.

It’s National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction week.

Falls are still the #1 cause of death in construction.

In roofing… that hits close to home.

Some food for thought, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

Roofers: 59–60 deaths per 100,000 workers
Logging workers: 100+ (usually #1)
Fishing/hunting: 80+
Construction laborers (overall): 20

Now compare that to jobs people assume are more dangerous:

Police officers: 13–18 per 100,000
Firefighters: 2–5 per 100,000

👉 Roofing is 3–10x more deadly than law enforcement or firefighting. This isn't a competition, and this isn’t meant to diminish the risks of other professions. But roofing consistently ranks among the top 5 most dangerous jobs in the country without the same pay structure, benefits, or built-in risk compensation.

Feels like something we should be talking about more.
