A little over a month ago, I took a trip up to Michigan to visit a good friend and assist her with her front yard garden (a project we’ve been working on for 3 seasons now, more on that another time).

While we were shopping for plants, we decided to stop by my all-time favorite container garden designer’s shop, Detroit Garden Works!

Due to some gentle nudging on my friend’s part, I was able to actually meet Deborah Silver and get a moment with her to share how much of an inspiration she has been to be over the course of my 7 year long career in horticulture. She inspired me to pursue my degree in the field, demonstrated the thick skin needed when working in a near-entirely male dominated field, and even allowed me to entertain the idea of starting a container garden-specific design company (when others said you need to do general landscaping to succeed).

Here’s my special thanks to Deborah, hoping to one day create something that she sees and is proud of. Also special thanks to my amazing friend for facilitating this and for being encouraging of all my wild ideas!

New container alert 🖤🪴🤍

This dark and light combo is the yin to my other urn design that I posted a while back - they have been placed on either side of our big bay window and frame it beautifully!

Now that July is here, the plant pickings are slim - at least, on a local level and at the smaller price points we all enjoy scoring. Nurseries and big box stores should still be carrying quite a bit (usually larger and $ but usually higher quality), but those local hardware stores and Amish farms are clearing and prepping for fall containers.

Because of this shift, this will be one of my last summer blooming designs for 2025. I do have a few more ideas in the realm of edible/tropical plants within container design, but also excited that this means I can shift towards prepping/planning fall containers! 🎃🍂

New part sun urn container garden! Created this as a way to combat the impending storm anxiety/excitement ⛈️🖤🪴

The moonlight caladium is an annual favorite of mine, as are the black cat petunias ✨ the bloodwort and varieties of tradescantia will fill and spill magically once established and make this design an absolute summer’s dream 🌿

Another urn has been designed to accompany this one as a partner pot, and will feature a black colocasia and a similar plant palette with more white red ♦️
