You Never Know What You’ll Find Behind Vinyl Siding… 👀

I was pulling siding off my old house to run electric from the crawlspace out to the exterior porch, but once the vinyl came off, I realized something interesting (and very common): the original clapboard siding was missing in this area and had been replaced with OSB at some point in the past.

This kind of patchwork isn’t unusual on older homes. Over the years, repairs get made, additions happen, and materials change, but it’s a good reminder that vinyl siding is just a cladding, not a waterproof or structural layer by itself.

In the video, I walk through what I found, why it matters, and what to think about when you’re working on older homes like this, especially when it comes to moisture, durability, and proper detailing.

It's unfortunate to find this and some of the other areas missing clapboard around the home. I'd considered pulling the vinyl siding to restore the exterior of this home to its former glory, but I'm not so sure thats possible.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve uncovered behind siding you've removed?

🏡 Another Home Performance Win in ! 💪

This project started with an energy audit after the homeowner reached out with comfort concerns, and as it turned out, the biggest issues were hiding in the knee-wall attic spaces.

The Challenge:
Out of seven knee-wall attics, only one had an existing access door - which had an HVAC system stuffed in on the other side.

How We Solved It:
✔️ Where possible, we accessed knee-walls from the exterior, carefully removing vinyl siding in the cold and entering through the sheathing.
✔️ Where exterior access wasn’t an option, we cut through drywall, completed the work, and then sealed everything back up , leaving the walls paint-ready.
✔️ All of this was done with extra care to protect the living space. Drywall dust and spray foam overspray are no joke (ask us how we know 😅).

❄️ With cold weather moving in last week, we had all hands on deck to get this project wrapped up quickly and efficiently. The crew’s in-process photos really highlight the prep work, attention to detail, and craftsmanship that goes into jobs like this — most of which gets covered up once we’re done.

From the energy audit, to designing the scope of work, to ex*****on in tough conditions, the entire team worked hard to deliver exactly what this client expected... and because things went so well, we’ll be back soon to insulate the floor of the bonus room above the garage!

One more thing, this project was eligible for rebates through the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program!

🧱 Structural Repairs Needed in a Tight Crawlspace?
👉 We can (most likely) get it done! 💪

This marks our third visit to this home as we continue working through multiple areas that needed structural repairs. Tight access, low clearance, and complex conditions haven’t stopped progress.

Work completed so far:
✔️ Mold Remediation
✔️ Sistered and blocked between floor joists
✔️ Added support beneath a boiler
✔️ Most recently, removed a bow in the floor on one side of the home

Every visit brings this house closer to being solid, stable, and properly supported. Structural issues like these often develop over time, and addressing them in phases is sometimes the smartest and most cost-effective approach. Although this home had repairs done in the past, no concrete was used on the foundation of the supports, causing them to fail. We poured concrete, waited a week for it to set, then returned and installed out lifting shores and beam.

If your floors feel uneven, bouncy, or you’ve been told repairs aren’t possible because of access - it’s worth a second opinion.

Happy New Year!

Do you have a Nightmare Attic? High Utility Bills? Comfort Issues?
👉 - we can solve it!

Take a look at this home in Rhodesdale we wrapped up the other week. This attic was extremely difficult to access, making air-sealing and insulation a real challenge, but our crew got it done!

What We Accomplished:
✔️ Reduced the blower door test by 30% through targeted air-sealing
✔️ Replaced the bath-fans and properly vented them to the exterior
✔️ Insulated the attic to R-50 with blown fiberglass

Even in tough-to-reach spaces, the right approach makes a measurable difference in comfort, efficiency, and utility costs.

🎯 Bonus: This project was rebate eligible through the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program, helping lower the homeowner’s out-of-pocket cost.

If your attic is hard to access, uncomfortable, or costing you money every month, you don’t have to live with it.

As many of us wake up to snow on the ground and temperatures below freezing, you might be asking yourself "Why is my house uncomfortable?"

FLC Energy is playing a small part of a rehabilitation project in Princess Anne, insulating a few roof-lines and exterior walls, but the access to areas you don't normally see provides a glimpse into the comfort issues we've all experienced in homes old and new.

Another Home Performance Project Completed in Nutters Crossing!

We were first called out to this home while it was under contract, to evaluate a structural concern and mold issues in the crawlspace. Once the property officially changed hands, we came back to do an energy audit and tackle all the issues the right way with a full home performance approach.

FLC's Scope of Work:
✔️ Conditioned Crawlspace
✔️ Structural repairs below the home
✔️ Mold remediation
✔️ Attic air-sealing
✔️ Properly vented all bath-fans to the exterior

📉 The Results:
After the work was complete, we achieved a 46% reduction on the blower door test, which is a massive improvement for a home like this, especially considering we didn't access the knee-wall areas on the front of the property.

📸 Why These Photos Matter:
Most of the work we do gets covered back up once the job is complete. That’s why documenting conditions, in-process work, and testing results is so critical. These photos show the real work happening behind the scenes and the stuff you’ll never see again, but absolutely benefit from.

✅ Tested.
✅ Documented.
✅ Done right.

We're spray foaming the roof-line above a master bedroom in this home from 1850. We'll leave this spray foam exposed in this application, applying an ignition barrier over-top it. The white color of the ignition barrier will help to reflect lighting in this space, brightening the room and making it feel open and larger than it did with the 8' ceilings.

This is a cool application for us to be a part of and awesome design choice from the client's side!

Home Performance & Comfort Upgrades in Woolford!

This 4,000 SF home is used as an Airbnb, and the owner wanted to make sure it stayed comfortable, cost-efficient, and healthy for their guests — even when it’s sitting empty with the thermostat set at just 55°.

When they noticed their utility bills climbing, we started with a whole-home energy audit to measure air leakage, diagnose comfort issues, and qualify the project for rebates through the Energize Delaware Program.

Here’s What We Found:
✔️ High air leakage throughout the attic and crawlspace.
✔️ Poorly vented bath fans causing humidity buildup.
✔️ Mold growth and falling insulation in the crawlspace.

FLC's Solution:
✅ Air-Sealed the Attic – Closed up top plates, plumbing, and electrical penetrations using blower door testing to guide the work.
✅ Re-insulated the Attic – Installed blown fiberglass to R-49 and added ProVent baffles for proper airflow.
✅ Encapsulated the Crawlspace – Removed debris and mold, installed a 20-mil v***r barrier, and applied closed-cell spray foam to the rim joist and foundation walls, creating a continuous air, moisture, and thermal barrier.
✅ Installed AprilAire E080 Dehumidifier – Keeps humidity under 60% year-round with remote monitoring via smartphone.
✅ Ventilation Upgrades – Replaced and properly vented bath fans to the home’s exterior with 4" rigid pipe to protect air quality and reduce moisture buildup.
✅ Whole-House Ventilation Added – To meet ASHRAE standards for air quality and balance indoor pressure.

The Results:
- Utility costs down 📉
- Consistent temperatures across all levels 🌡️
- Crawlspace humidity under control 💧
- A healthier, more efficient home for guests and owners alike 🌿

If Mold Comes Back… We'll Make Sure It Doesn’t!

This homeowner in Salisbury bought their home in 2023 after having the crawlspace mold remediated as part of the sale. Unfortunately, the fix didn’t last and the mold came back.

That’s when they called FLC Energy!

We remediated the mold again and then conditioned the crawlspace to solve the root cause of the problem - moisture and humidity. By sealing and conditioning the space, we’ve ensured this homeowner won’t have to worry about mold returning ever again.

✅ Clean.
✅ Dry.
✅ Permanently protected.

If your crawlspace problems keep coming back, it’s time for a real solution.
