Yesterday was a day we will not soon forget in downtown Sallisaw.
We had the privilege of unveiling a new public art tribute at the Pocket Park honoring Steve Davis, a Sallisaw Black Diamond, Oklahoma Sooner great, and a man whose legacy reaches far beyond the football field.
We were especially grateful to be joined by Steve’s brother, Joe Davis, other members of the Davis family, and Donnie Poindexter, the talented local artist who created this meaningful tribute. Having Steve’s family with us made the moment even more special, and we are deeply thankful they were able to share it with our community.
Steve’s accomplishments on the football field are legendary. He helped lead Oklahoma to national championships, and as a starter, he never lost to Texas in the Red River Rivalry. So it felt especially fitting that a day that began in Sallisaw by honoring one of our own — a Black Diamond and Sooner great — ended with a little Sooner magic down in Dallas.
But this tribute was never meant to be only about football.
Steve Davis’s legacy is also found in his faith, leadership, character, and the way he lived his life. Those are qualities that transcend championships, records, and rivalries. They are qualities that can inspire each of us.
Steve’s story is a reminder that great things can grow from small towns. Leadership can begin in ordinary places. And a life built on faith, character, and purpose can leave an impact that lasts far beyond any scoreboard.
Thank you to the Davis family, Donnie Poindexter, everyone who helped make this project possible, and all who gathered with us for the unveiling.
