Built a blanket fort today. More accurately, I assisted my wife, the site foreman, in building it.

I hope the boys don't get too disappointed when I take my ladder back Monday morning....

Fifth and final day of the re-skirting project. There were no Day 4 pics, as I'd forgotten to take some at the end of the day, and once I'd remembered, the sprinklers had been turned on. That wet cedar looked AWESOME, though!

"It's just how I envisioned it" were the owner's words when looking at the finished product. I'll take that as a compliment. Next time I'm shooting for, "It's better than I could have ever imagined!"

The last pair of pics are of my son, Grayson, helping me with the haul-off. He actually enjoyed it. Or maybe he was just happy to not be doing school at the moment...

On to the next job, should God be pleased to provide one...

End of Day Three. Finished one side of the stairs and nearly completed the rest of the front. Hopefully tomorrow I will finish the pickets the rest of the way around and get on with the horizontal trim.

Before I do the trim, though, I will need to pull off and replace the 2 x 4 decking along the front edge. It's too rotted out to expect any screws to hold in it. Wasn't planning on doing that, but you never know what you're going to encounter on jobs like this. Rot happens!

End of Day Two (which was yesterday). Didn't get quite as far as I'd hoped, but the deck's "bones" behind those double doors needed a lot of repair before I could put the new boards on. The owner had no desire to store anything under there, so he didn't want new doors. I was most grateful for that!

Yes, those are cedar fence pickets. They look pretty good, right? The dog-ears and general unevenness of them along the top will all be covered up with more pickets going horizontally. It was more important to have them look good along the ground.

Day Three post coming up...

Day One of a large deck re-skirting project. I removed the old cedar siding all the way around and then spent about three hours pulling out at least 200 nails. And not just any nails, mind you. These were some sort of communistic, anti-American nail gun nails that had a "T" for a head that the claw end of a hammer would fold up like handles on a periscope instead of grab. Had to use vice grips on some to get them out. I think it would have been easier to replace the whole deck! 😄

Despite the troublesome nails, the weather was great, I got to pray some while I worked, and when it was all done, I treated myself to a new pair of work gloves... because I'm cool like that. Can't wait to try them out tomorrow when I start cutting and installing the new cedar boards. Gonna be awesome! Stay tuned....

For the last 15 years I've worked a desk job. Then the coronavirus caused that job to go away.

Today, I get to work outside in beautiful weather and play with power tools.

Thank you, Linebarger.

Thank you, coronavirus.

Thank you, God.

On April 8, my employer of 15 years let me go, citing COVID-19 cutbacks as the reason. Not a furlough, but a termination. Once this pandemic is all over and the economy comes back, I was told I can reapply for my job.

The Providence of God can be a bewildering thing, especially in times like this. "How could they fire ME? Don't they know who I am?" But that bewildering Providence, for those who know and have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, shouldn't be a frightening thing. God is in utter control of this pandemic. More than that, He foreordained it before the foundation of the world. Don't ask me why; you can ask Him yourself about that...though good luck to you in getting an answer.

"The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD." Job 1:21

While my job was taken away, in return He has given me an unprecedented increase in my handyman business. And when I started this business about a year and a half ago, I'd wanted to take it full-time eventually. Is that what God is doing for me now? Too soon to tell. But in the meantime, I want to honor Him as best I can with it. So for anyone out there coping with a financial hardship because of this pandemic who needs handyman work done on your home, please let help you. Don't neglect a needed repair because you can't afford to have it done. We'll work out the financial part of it. God is blessing me and this handyman business; I think it only right that I pass that on.

Spring snow in San Antonio! ❄️ The shadows from the trees diminish what's going on here, but I did a dryer vent cleaning today and this is only part of what I got out through the roof vent.

The importance of cleaning your dryer vent annually can't be stressed enough. Failing to do so can become a major fire hazard. According to the U.S. Fire Administration (an entity of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency), "2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss."
