Leuchtenbergia principis a.k.a. Agave Cactus is an unusual species. The genus is named after Maximilian Eugen Joseph (1817–1852), Duke of Leuchtenberg and amateur botanist. It is the only species found in its genus, and thus given the name principis. At first glance, it appears to be a succulent agave, until you see the spines. Young plants may have soft tubercles, yet they are still armed with a load of spines, which stymy invasion, except by their pollinators. Inside that arsenal of spines, you will find incredible lovely and fragrant bursts of yellow blooms, followed by large seed pods. They are a true collector’s plant that will live many years and grow slowly, but become quite large.

Prized for their fantastic variety of shapes and sizes, Aeonium is a genus of about 35 species of subtropical succulent plants of the family Crassulaceae. Most of them, especially the larger species, are native to the Canary Islands. Smaller species are found in Northern and Eastern Africa. There are many varieties and hybrids available. One thing to remember is that you should not grow them in full hot sun like cacti. They will flower in the warmer months, and eventually produce branches from the central stem. We have the following varieties in stock: Large Aeonium var. ‘Kiwi’ and Large Aeonium var. ‘Midnight rose’. Both are in 6 inch pots. Our next show will the the San Antonio Cactus and Xerophyte Society Show and Sale at the Garden Center in San Antonio. The dates are April 27, 28, and 29 from 9:00 AM to 5PM each day. Hope to see you there.
