The San Diego County Fair is underway, and it’s a great chance to connect with agriculture right here in our region.

UC Cooperative Extension San Diego supports a range of programs that contribute to local food systems, youth development, and community education—and you can see that work in action at the fair. Our Master Gardener, Master Food Preserver, and 4-H programs are part of the festivities every year.

Stop by to check out gardening tips, food preservation demos, and projects led by local youth. It’s a great way to learn something new, meet the people behind the programs, and see how this work connects across our communities.

Plant*Grow*Eat at the San Diego County Fair was a success! We are proud we were a resource to the 2,500+ students, teachers, and parents who came through this joyful, educational field trip program. During this week in May, UC Master Gardeners toured the classes through the gardens, the livestock areas, and had them stop at our booth to learn all about some of our favorite decomposers.

Thank you to all our UC Master Gardener volunteers for their hard work! Shown here are Jay Davis, Heidi Bentz, Cindy Davis, Michelle Farrow, and Debbie Handal in action. Photos by Nancy Bellinghiere Hall, Leta Bender, Vicki Pepper, and Jon Lewis.

Applications for schools to participate in this fantastic program next May are on https://www.sdfair.com/p/participate/educational-programs/plant-grow-eat1

Who doesn't love petunias? These old-fashioned flowers (Petunia x hybrida - in the Solanaceae, or Nightshade, family) thrive with regular water in full sun. You can deadhead spent blooms to keep the show coming, and either pinch branch ends to keep the plant compact, or allow them to trail over the edges of pots and garden beds. Feed with a balanced fertilizer if growth starts to slow. Local garden centers have a variety of beautiful options for the garden, with solid, spotted, variegated and double blooms in colors from white through vivid pink and purple. The images show petunias in pink, burgundy, and purple with white speckles on the blooms.
