We met a Yellow-Crowned Night Heron while exploring City Park in New Orleans. The proof of a well-planned landscape is in the wildlife that shows up to inhabit. Want a plethora of birds, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other garden friends. All of our landscapes provide habitat through ecological design and plant selection that offers forage, water, shelter, and layers for protection. We believe that a well planned landscape provides beauty as well as bread and refuge for all living things.

Gorgeous layers and color contrasts at . We love the lush, verdant environment of the oak-lined river flanked by Indica canna (Golden Canna) and Tradescantia pallida (Purple Heart). Stone bridges span the water offering a romantic shift in perspective.

We could meander through this park for hours, despite the humidity. We definitely took some notes and highly recommend a visit if you’re ever in .

Inspiration abounds at the San Antonio Botanic Gardens ! We loved their container fruit orchard (first photo), crape myrtle lined staircase (second photo), water savers garden (photo 3), ponds flanked by greenhouses (photos 4 and 5), and serene Japanese style garden (photos 6 and 7)! This barely scratched the surface of the beautifully maintained and designed gardens. We could have spent the whole day here!

Chlosyne lacinia//Border Patch Butterfly

Never met a butterfly we didn’t like, and we are so happy to meet this one! Our paths crossed in San Antonio . We thought this medium sized butterfly perfectly complemented this white zinnia. Their coloring/markings can be variable and their host plants are members of the sunflower (Helianthus) family. Have you spotted these beauties in your garden?

Webinar TOMORROW: Water Harvesting for the Zombie Apocalypse 🧟‍♀️💦🧟‍♂️

3:30pm PT/5:30pm CT

Picture this: a zombie plague has befallen every country in the world. Stores are looted and shelves are empty. Essential supplies like water, soap, food, and medicine have become more valuable than gold.

Now imagine you live in this house, with a holistic system for harvesting water through rain tanks, greywater, and earthworks. This water is used in an automated system to irrigate fruit orchards, veggie gardens, and medicinal herb beds. Apocalypse, Shmocalypse! You have everything you need right outside of your door.

Monarch cats are finally popping up all over our garden. These friendly cities will hopefully all turn into butterflies, but sadly we know that it seems many will not make it that far. Between birds eating the caterpillars to issues with the chrysalides, the journey from egg to emergence is a long, hard road. Which probably explains why these butterflies are nearly extinct, with numbers dropping drastically every year.

Here’s how you can help:

🌿plant native milkweeds to boost both monarchs and native plant pops
✂️cut tropical milkweed to the ground or remove it every November
🌼plant lots of other flowers in your garden to provide nectar
🕸clear cobwebs from areas around milkweed, to prevent 🦋 getting caught after emergence

While it’s fun and educational to bring some caterpillars inside for metamorphosis, it’s not seen as a primary benefit to the species by experts at . Check the great articles on their page for more info!

Accurate.

Our Principal Designer and co-owner Eric never ceases to amaze clients with his vault of knowledge and ability. Wherever we go, he’s looking for clues from the landscape and applying his ecological understanding to understand the world around him. After a consultation with Eric, clients feel at ease and excited to see their landscaping dreams come true. And now that he’s on his way to being a licensed landscaping contractor, he can’t wait to see these projects through to fruition. He’s not exactly omniscient but he’s close!

One of the wisest qualities about Eric is his willingness to admit when he needs to call in another expert. We are now building our virtual rolladex of San Diego-based subcontractors for trades like demo, grading, masonry, and deck building. Is this your specialty? Send us a DM to get the convo started! Lauren’s Grape Poppy

Have you ever noticed these little pin pricks on poppy pods? At first suspect you might feel concern that a family member is self-medicating, however quiet observation has shows us that it’s all for the birds! They, too, have discovered the pain management properties of this flower and are helping themselves! They may also be in it for the seeds, which are high in fat and protein.

As it is Memorial Day we are reflecting on the sacrifices of many humans to get us where we are today, and how much we are a part of nature. Many of the people who lost their lives defending this country would have relied on pain medication derived from this plant.

Always remember, you are part of the web! So go ahead and get wild!
