We are the physical choreographers behind serendipitous encounters, family outings and date nights in communities around America. We have a new international project to share: the expansion of Alhambra Mall in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Located in the Samborondón neighborhood, this multi-level retail destination is growing to include six levels of parking and  three floors of office space. In addition it has been designed to accommodate future rooftop padel and pickleball courts—the first of their kind in Ecuador.

Collaborating with international clients to create places that bring people together is at the heart of what we do. It’s especially rewarding to share our “social at every scale” approach across different cultures and communities.

Looking forward to seeing this project come to life in fall 2026.

How do campuses foster connection and learning?

In this video featuring our work on the San José State University campus master plan and USF’s Lone Mountain Dining Commons, Principal Christen Soares shares how we design with a focus on the spaces between buildings—creating walkable, social, and flexible environments that support learning and community.

At the campus scale, master planning reimagines the institution as a cohesive, student-centered environment, strengthening identity, improving access and transit connections, and expanding walkable and micro-mobility networks. Academic spaces, housing, and open space are strategically expanded to support a growing and diverse student community.

Designing the future of community college campuses in Silicon Valley.

Field Paoli Architects is proud to lead the Facilities Master Plan for the San José–Evergreen Community College District, shaping a long-range vision across more than 1.6 million square feet and three campuses.

This work reimagines each campus as a cohesive, student-centered environment, strengthening identity, improving accessibility, and creating spaces that support connection, learning, and community. Sustainability and resilience are embedded throughout, helping position the District for the future.

Grateful to collaborate with , Cygnus Planning, Dalton Education Associates, , and TBD Cost Estimating on this important work.

How is AI actually being used in architecture today?

Senior Associate Ben Griffin shares how Field Paoli is using AI to bring greater clarity and context to clients through high-end renderings.

At Field Paoli, we’re exploring AI as a tool to support the design process, not replace it. Tools like Nano Banana, Midjourney, and Photoshop’s generative features are helping us visualize ideas faster and with greater flexibility.

At the same time, we’re seeing emerging applications across the industry, from large language models that support research and iteration to AI-driven tools that assist with rendering, space planning, and even code analysis.

The technology is still evolving. The most effective use of AI today is not about automation. It’s about expanding creative exploration, improving efficiency, and supporting better-informed design decisions.

At its core, architecture remains a human-centered practice. AI is simply another tool helping us push ideas further and communicate them more clearly.

This month, we’re spotlighting Associate and Project Manager Anna Fernández, who will be celebrating 5 years with the firm this July. Anna brings a thoughtful, people-centered approach to her work, shaped by her deep interest in how people experience space.

What she values most about working at Field Paoli is the collaborative environment and the opportunity to work across a variety of project types. She thrives in a setting where ideas are shared and refined as a team.

One of Anna’s favorite projects is the recently completed Whole Foods Anchored neighborhood center in Summerlin, Las Vegas. She is currently working on multiple Blue Bottle Coffee locations, including recently completed cafés at Montgomery Village in Santa Rosa, Fashion Show Mall in Las Vegas, and Old Orchard in Chicago. Oakbrook Center in Chicago is currently under construction, with more locations on the way.

Anna’s path to architecture began with a natural draw to spaces and how they shape human experience. Originally from Puerto Rico, she earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Puerto Rico and her master’s degree from the University of Southern California.

Outside the office, Anna loves practicing yoga.

We’re grateful for the perspective, curiosity, and collaborative energy Anna brings to our work.

“Businesses benefit from women in leadership from an empathy perspective and a fairness perspective.” — Christen Soares

On the eve of International Women’s Day, we’re reflecting on the women whose leadership shapes Field Paoli. As we celebrate 40 years as a firm, we’re also celebrating the women who help define our culture and guide our work.

As a WBENC-certified women-owned business, we believe empathy, fairness, and diverse perspectives lead to stronger teams, stronger partnerships, and stronger communities.

This International Women’s Day, we honor the women who design, lead, and inspire the next generation across our industry.

As Field Paoli’s 40th anniversary month comes to a close, one thing is clear: our greatest strength has always been our people.

At Field Paoli, culture is more than a value; it is a way of life. It’s how we work every day. Principal Maureen O’Neil calls it our “secret sauce.”

We are committed to creating an environment where people feel supported, challenged, and empowered to grow. From early career designers to firm leadership, mentorship is embedded in how we collaborate, share knowledge, and build lasting careers. This culture drives stronger ideas, deeper partnerships, and more meaningful places for the communities we serve.

As we celebrate Field Paoli’s 40th anniversary this month, we’re reflecting on the projects that shaped our firm and continue to define our work today. Stonestown Galleria is one of those places.

In 1987, Field Paoli reimagined Stonestown as a vibrant destination, transforming the shopping center into a light-filled urban galleria inspired by classical European architecture. The project became one of our founding milestones and helped establish our belief that retail environments can be more than places to shop—they can be places to gather, connect, and build community.

More than three decades later, we returned to Stonestown as architect of record for the new Whole Foods Market, continuing the evolution of this historic San Francisco destination. The grocery anchor reflects the shift toward neighborhood-focused retail and reinforces Stonestown as a thriving community hub.

At a time when many malls are struggling, continues to adapt, grow, and remain relevant. For us, this project is a reminder that thoughtful design, strong partnerships, and a focus on people can create places that endure.

This is Social at Every Scale.

For 40 years, Field Paoli has been creating places that bring people together. As we celebrate this milestone, we’re reflecting on the projects that have shaped communities for generations.

Napa is one of those stories. More than 30 years ago, our team designed Napa Town Center. Recently, we returned to transform the area into First Street Napa, a vibrant, over 100,000 square-foot destination in the heart of downtown. The district is an inviting place where curated shops, distinctive dining, public art, and outdoor gathering spaces come together to celebrate the spirit of wine country.
It’s a reminder that thoughtful placemaking evolves, growing alongside the communities it serves.

In recognition of Black History Month, we honor the lasting contributions of Black leaders and visionaries who have shaped our communities and shared cultural landscape.

This image was taken at the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama — a powerful place of remembrance and reflection.

At Field Paoli Architects, we believe the built environment plays a critical role in advancing equity and creating public spaces that serve diverse communities with dignity and care.

This month, and every month, we remain committed to listening, learning, and advocating for more just and inclusive places.
