I participated in the LOVE SLO Day again this year. This time I heard that the pathways at the SLO Botanical Garden were in poor shape. It had been many years since material was replenished and the ( awesome!) rains had eroded many areas and washed mud into the pathways.
I worked with the directors of the garden and arranged for 24 tons of pathway material ( DG) to be delivered.
My crew and I moved the material as close to the pathways as possible on Friday.
On the Saturday, there were more people than I had planned. Trails were raked, compacted, re-raked.
My camera was damaged the week after the event so I don't have any pictures of my own, but there were Slo High School students, Mission Prep Students, Elementary Students, a Boy Scout, retired people,at least one doctor, and families.
Exhausting work but feels great to do something like this!

LOVE SLO Volunteers Needed!
I have a project at the SLO Botanical Garden to improve the walkways. The decomposed granite has been getting thin and the rains have eroded a lot.
I am looking for some help next Saturday, 3/16/19, at the SLO Botanical Garden. There will be raking, shoveling and some wheelbarrow work.
NOTE- Because of a plant sale, this event is a week earlier the the official Love SLO Day.
Weather looks good and things should be dried out by Saturday.

Last year I started to work milkweeds into landscapes.
They have a couple traits that I am not fond of... They look bad sometimes, get a lot of pests like aphids, and I don't think they can survive extra dry conditions.
But they are a food source for Monarchs. It is not uncommon to see ten or more fat caterpillars munching away on a little plant.
I look for places in a yard that are not too close to any plants that may get the pests, or may need to be sprayed with insecticide.

This is a back yard in San Luis Obispo. I was prepearing area for a ne2w Allan Block Wall . Access to the area was very skinny and a gas meter was in the way. This is the smallest excavator I have ever used, but it still was strong enough to dig the hard clay soil below.

This is an Allan Block Wall Job,using Europa Blocks. Back yard was really tight location for access, also with gas meter in the way. Built stairs using some extra cutting. Phase 2 coming!

This is about 200 feet of curving walkways. We added some flare at intersections.

This is an example of the new "Quad" pavers mixed in with "Magnums, #1 & #2". The paver pattern does not have long lines. This job required very little extra cutting and got a "mixed" look.

Berkeley Botanical Garden
This place was huge! Vast amount of species. I spent three hours there and missed so much!
It was a cold and foggy day with smoke and ash from a fire somewhere. The place is on a hill, so you need to be a hiker for many parts of it. I was cold sometimes, hot other, out of breath sometimes as well.
There was a pretty big assortment of Manzanita plants. The Redwood Groves were amazing ( I could not see the tops through the fog). Strawberry Creek cuts through the garden and gets used for different planting zones: A Lily Pond, waterfall areas, redwood tree area ect.
The plant labeling was really good and it really had to be with so many plants.

This house was pretty sad inside and out. Owners and neighbors are pretty happy now!

When I do a flagstone patio, I try to put something into the job that is unique and maybe some personality of owner.

I have done some hearts, dog bones, peace symbols, airplane propeller, and some other shapes hidden in the pieces.

My current flagstone job is for a customer from New Zealand. I figured that maybe the island shapes could work.

The owner said that he and his family were very pleased to get a symbolic map in their patio.
