Cut, dip, plant. That is the whole method.

Boost-a-Root works the moment the knife comes off the plant. The cut end seals, so the plant holds its sap instead of bleeding it out, and the infection that usually walks in through an open wound never gets the chance.

Most people think Boost-a-Root is only for cuttings. The bigger job is wound healing. Prune a plant, take a cutting, make a graft — dip the cut end and it seals. No sap bleeding out, no open door for infection, and the cutting stays hydrated while it works on roots.

We grow our own moss, and this is what it looks like.

Dense green cushions, not shredded filler. The kind that makes a terrarium look like it has been sitting in a forest for years instead of assembled on a Tuesday afternoon.

It goes in terrariums, under a Budkin, around the base of a potted plant, or on a dish by itself in a window where it just gets to be green.

Moss is worth seeing in person. Colour and texture are the whole point, and a screen flattens both.

Sunflowers do not have to be yellow.

One of our crew grew this one at home. Copper at the base of every petal, burning out to gold at the tips, and a centre so dark it reads black in the sun. The same flower everybody thinks they know, wearing something else entirely.

We are around plants all day, and then the crew goes home and grows this in the front yard. It does not really switch off.

Flowers are the other half of what we do. There is a cooler of fresh stems up front, and our florist builds arrangements to order.

Rare collectables everywhere you look, not just on one shelf.

People walk in expecting a rack of rare plants tucked in a corner. In here they run both sides of the aisle, up the slat wall at the end, and across the racks under the grow lights. Anthuriums, variegated philodendron, monstera albo, things that sit on a want list for a year and almost never sit in a store.

Most of them we have exactly one of, and most of them we grew here. That is why the room looks different week to week.

Half this plant came out white.

Every leaf is marbled differently. One nearly all cream, the next split down the middle, the one below it flecked like paint was thrown at it. The plant decides, and it never decides twice the same way.

This is a Monstera albo. It sits out on a stool rather than on a shelf, which tells you what we think of it.

Plants like this we have one of. It goes home with the first person who walks in and falls for it, and the stool stays empty until the next one is ready.

Purple splashed across white, and no two petals wear it the same.

Four flowers are open on this one right now, with buds still coming up the stem behind them. The leaf standing behind it is a variegated Monstera albo, cream and green, holding the backdrop like it was asked to.

Blooms are on a clock. An orchid carries its flowers a few weeks and then spends the rest of the year being a very good set of leaves. What is open today will not be open in a month.

That is the reason to come this week instead of next.

Ferns brush your shoulders on the way down this row.

They hang low over the racks, and the grow lights underneath throw pink across the floor and up into the fronds. People slow down here without meaning to.

Most of what sits under those lights we started ourselves. Trays of young plants, cuttings taking hold, some of it headed for the rare wall once it sizes up.

The row looks different every week because it is actually growing. That is the part a photo cannot hand you — you have to stand in it.
