11 Plants That Fill Every Gap… Without Taking Over!
One of the biggest challenges in landscape design isn’t planting… it’s finishing.
Filling in all those little gaps so a space feels lush, full, and complete… without creating a maintenance nightmare down the road.
The key? Choosing plants that play well together.
Here are a few of our favorites that do exactly that:
🌿 Penstemon ‘Husker Red’
Adds height and contrast with deep burgundy foliage and soft blooms. A great vertical accent that doesn’t overwhelm the space. (We really love this one!)
🌿 Amsonia (Blue Star)
Light, airy texture with soft blue flowers in spring… and incredible golden color in the fall. One of those plants that just keeps getting better every year.
🌿 Liriope muscari
Tough, evergreen, and clean. Perfect for edging and filling in gaps with structure and consistency.
🌿 Virginia Bluebells
A beautiful native that brings early spring color… then gracefully steps aside for the next season.
🌸 Creeping Phlox
A spring showstopper. Spills over edges with vibrant color and instantly softens hard lines.
🌸 Dianthus ‘Cheddar Pinks’
Compact, tidy, and lightly fragrant. A classic choice for adding color without creating chaos.
🌿 Geranium ‘Biokovo’
One of the best “problem solver” plants out there. Soft blooms, easy growth, and fills space without taking over.
🌿 Lamb’s Ear
Soft, silvery foliage that adds incredible contrast and texture. (And yes… everyone touches it.)
🌿 Heuchera (Coral Bells)
Reliable color all season long. The foliage alone makes this plant worth it.
🌿 Sedum ‘Dragon’s Blood’
Low, durable, and drought tolerant with rich red tones that evolve through the seasons.
🌿 Epimedium
Delicate looking, but surprisingly tough. A great option for those tricky shady spots.
When you combine plants like these, something really special happens…
You get a landscape that feels full, layered, and intentional
✔️ Different heights
✔️ Different textures
✔️ Color through multiple seasons
✔️ And most importantly… low maintenance over time
That’s the goal every single time🌿
