Everything you need to know about fruting mushrooms 👇

Fruiting isn’t magic - it happens when you give mushrooms the right environment to trigger fruiting.

The key factors are:
đŸ„” Temperature
đŸ˜¶â€đŸŒ«ïž Humidity
đŸ˜€ Fresh Air Exchange (FAE)

Temp should be a little cooler than incubation when fruiting - this will lead to more robust mushroom development.

Humidity should be about 85%-95% relative humidity, which is perfect for pinning and healthy growth.

FAE helps keep C02 levels low, which is critical for healthy mushroom growth.

Watch on to learn specific tips and tricks to get specific mushrooms to fruit!

Mushrooms don’t need sunlight in the same way plants do. However, lighting still plays an important role in mushroom cultivation.

Indirect light leads to better mushroom structure and pigmentation. Not enough light = pale, leggy mushrooms that nobody wants.

Meanwhile, too much light can dry the mushrooms out, ruining your grow.

Try to find the balance when fruiting mushrooms - use indirect light that won’t dry them out.

It’s fruitin’ time!

How do you know your mushroom block is ready for fruiting?

Look for full colonization! When all you can see is white mycellium, it’s time to fruit.

Science is amazing. One team of researchers used induced mutagenesis to reduce the spore production of Oyster Mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus). The reason was to minimize potential health hazards associated with spore inhalation. Their results were published in a 2014 study titled “Strain Improvement in Pleurotus Ostreatus using UV light and ethyl methyl sulfonate as mutagens.”

“Truffle growers look no further.”

It’s always humbling to see customers who love our products as much as we do.

Here’s the rest of what B. had to to say:
“Truffle growers look no further. I tested every bag on Etsy and most off the internet. This is the bag you want.— When the bag arrived it seemed wet, and I had my doubts. I started these bags on the same day as 8 other vendors. They came packaged well and were all sterile. I did not lose a single bag. Used liq culture to start them. These colonized first. When finished the 3 lb bag yielded close to 1lb of truffles. These smoked any other bag. These bags perform!! Don’t buy anywhere else.”

It was an honor to work with David Healy and his students to teach them about the wonders of mushroom cultivation.

We donated five inoculated bags of our oyster mushrooms for a school project to a local middle school, and the students had a blast growing and learning about blue oyster mushrooms.

Not only did the students get to experience the life-cycle of mushrooms, they also partnered with the Culinary Arts class to harvest, prep and cook the mushroom for a class made pizza party!

Here’s what David had to say:

“We grew the oyster mushrooms in our classroom over about 2 weeks in October and November during our mycology unit. Every Biodiversity student had the opportunity to help in the process. We observed the mycelium colonize the bags and followed the steps to help the mushrooms fruit. We had great success.

When the mushrooms were just about ready to harvest, we teamed up with the Culinary Arts students for a fun collaboration
mushroom pizza! The Culinary students taught us how to make pizza dough. The dough was made and left overnight. The next day we cooked down the oyster mushrooms and used them as toppings on our pizzas.

Although some students were reluctant to eat mushrooms on their pizza, many students enjoyed them, and a few students that had never eaten mushrooms were brave enough to try them. We had a lot of fun observing, growing, and eating the blue oyster mushrooms.”
