You know that gut feeling you get when you’re talking with a potential client and something is telling you, "This is going to be a nightmare?"
Listen to it.
After more than 25 years in the design business, I’ve learned that those instincts are usually picking up on something, even when you can’t quite put your finger on what it is yet.
And yes, sometimes we ignore the signs. We take the project anyway. And eventually, we realize the relationship simply isn’t working.
Letting a client go can feel like a failure, especially when there’s significant revenue attached to the project. But sometimes, it’s one of the healthiest decisions you can make – for your business, for your team and, quite frankly, for your sanity.
The goal isn’t to avoid every challenging client. It’s to recognize the difference between challenges you can successfully navigate and patterns that are telling you this may never be a healthy working relationship.
