Natural, rustic loveliness - one of our Indonesian Madura canopy daybeds dressed up in Moroccan sabra and stripes with creamy suzani and Indian blockprint pillows thrown in. These hand carved teak beds work beautifully out on covered patios, or tucked into guest rooms or offices for daytime lounging and nighttime, cozy sleeps.

It is Galungan here in Bali. Today families and villages welcome ancestral spirits and dieties from the Hindu pantheon who come down from the heavens and reside among the living until they ascend back on Kuningan ten days later. Each house compound here has a beautiful home temple that is lovingly cared for throughout the year, but on Galungan every shrine is cleaned and consecrated to welcome the spirits back - and elaborate offerings are made to honor these important visitors. Penjors, tall arcing bamboo poles with finely wrought palm leaf decorations line the street, welcoming and providing platforms for more offerings. Processions of faithful gather at each village’s temple to celebrate the triumph of dharma vs adharma. Galungan honors the legend of Lord Indra saving the Balinese from an ancient tyrannical king who destroyed temples and tried to usurp the gods - at one point striking the ground with his staff, making fresh water spring forth, saving a poisoned army from the evil king and overcoming him at last. Those of you that have been to Bali may have visited the site of this miracle - Tirta Empul, the holy water temple. Today is quiet as our friends here gather with family and have communal feasts and prayers. We always feel so lucky to be here on these special days.

Sourcing here in Bali is always a joy - we are finding all sorts of gorgeous old architectural salvage and hand carved teak beauties for you on our annual buying trip here - as well as finding treasures for our villa build up in Ubud, Uma Rembulan Villa Ubud Bali - so it’s extra exciting digging through warehouses and fields of old doors and panels. Bali remains a magical place - you just have to get beyond the chaos of the congested spaces and the beauty remains as enchanting as ever.

Loving all the color and drama our new vintage glass demijohns and sweet ceramic elephants bring to TDL right as you walk in! Treasures found in Bali but imported from all over the world by visitors coming and staying over the centuries. There are so many long, complex stories of Chinese, European, Southeast Asian travelers coming to Indonesia and staying, captivated by beauty or business or the shifting tides of history. Sourcing things old and new left or traded by these communities is always an interesting dive into the complex timeline of the archipelago. Old doors and architectural salvage are some of our favorite things to source. Solid teak doors from India work beautifully indoors and out - and amazing one of a kind pieces like our triple archways can be built in to create stunning backdrops or full walkthrough structures. Our Indonesian doors with more floral carving make gorgeous interior doorways - or we love using them as alternatives to headboards for memorable bedrooms. Come explore our back stacks and see what gets your creative juices flowing. History, solid wood, incredible craftsmanship - love!

Bali style moments - an old carved teak trunk on wheels, our grinning terracotta and wooden tigers, bronze monkeys, dragons, and kiwis, terrcotta temples called Candi, vintage sweets molds, and organic furniture made from old root wood. It’s a wild, wonderful world of new goodies over here.

A little Moroccan Balinese mix of influences here - with Berber doors, lava stone Indonesian statuary - leather poufs from Marrakech - and a hand carved water buffalo skull from Sumatra. It’s all in the mix here - love our reach around the globe and the way it mixes here in our little TDL melting pot!

Back in Bali - the first days of our annual Bali buying trip look a little different this summer. We are working with our amazing team over here on our villa project outside of Ubud. This dream has been a long time coming - we’ve been traveling to Bali to find treasures for TDL since 1995. It’s such a magical thing to visit our long time antique vendor and artisan workshops and source things for this home in the hills. Old doors, carved panels, the big stone pots like we just unpacked back home - all are finding amazing places here at the villa. We are calling it Uma Rembulan, House of the Moon - and hopefully it will be just a few more lunar cycles until she is complete. Take a peek at the progress - this was just a blank slate 8 months ago… We start back to sourcing for TDL next week - and will share what we find and give you some updates here at the villa too!
