Garden soil should really be built before you start trying to grow in. Because we just moved, that wasnt an option for us this year. that means this Garden is going to require a lot of work but it's going to be okay because I'm still going to grow food and have a successful garden plot this year. just because you can't do things perfectly doesn't mean that they aren't worth doing, it just means that you have to try a little harder. this is good for our brains and it's something that more people should willingly take on!

It was $4.05/gallon 20 minutes down the road. $3.28 for regular. I just topped off an F150 for under $50. what is this madness, and why isnt it consistent?

This area doesn't have good topsoil to buy, and it really shows. The first batch of soil i got over the last 2 weeks is mixed with compost, but honestly that's a stretch- its not finished as well as it should be, and there are chunks of manure to break up. so yesterday I got some from someone else, and it has almost no organics. that means I'm going to have to do a lot to build up the soil health here, which isn't something I've had to do in a long time. the type of clays in the soil mean it dries really hard, and there's enough silt that it doesn't really hold onto that water well. I am really kicking myself for not buying the $2 bags of soil while they were on sale. I tend to avoid those because they're hevay in organics, but that's exactly what this soil is missing! in the meantime, i will likely have to really fertilize the crap out of these beds - there's not much going on in the way of life in this soil, at least until I build that up. building takes time! so, what would you do to add nutrients? hit me with your ideas!

Bread and Butter Pickles that are so good you'll never need another recipe! my great grandmother used this same recipe, and it's the only way I like them these days! you will need: 6 lbs of cucumbers, preferably the pickling kind 8 cups of thinly sliced onions 1/2 cup canning salt 4 cups vinegar 4.5 cups sugar 2 Tbsp mustard seed 1.5 Tbsp celery seed 1 Tbsp turmeric you can use pickling lime if you want to keep these super crisp, you'll just add in a soak and rinse step using 1 cup of pickling lime.

5 things you don't need to be a homesteader: 1. a freeze dryer 2. a dairy animal 3. raised garden beds 4. sourdough starter 5. 5 acres of land argue about it in the comments if you want to.

Over the last 2 years, I've lost 45 pounds with the help of the right medications, eating as many whole foods as I can, and moving my body more. Would I like to spend more time at the gym? Yes, absolutely. But it doesn't really fit in my schedule with a small child. She can hang around or "help" while I move more than 2,000 pounds of dirt though!
