We grow lavender and dahlias on our farm at 1364 River Road in Sequim, Washington.

Folks ask if the deer bother dahlias. In the past I would say no. But now they are a real pain. We have had to use an electric fence to keep them away from the fields and thankfully it works. Yesterday I made this "lay-flat" or mandala as I like to call it. Overnight, they ate all but two blooms. Sheesh!

Dahlia growers will likely recognise these dahlias as Bloomquist Jean. This dahlia has won more often than any other in the shows over the past few years. It seems appropriate that she is giving us instructions.

Wrapping up the dahlia bloom season is a process. We are busy digging out some older dahlias and moving some to new locations. And I am spending the late afternoons distilling the last of the lavender in the drying shed. Which brings me to a question. We make an excellent hydrosol during our distillation. In part because we use distilled water in the still and because we distill primarily the lavender buds and not the stems. But we have never tried to sell it. I am wary about shipping it as we don't have proper packaging. But it would be great for local pickup. Hydrosol is the distilled essence of lavender with the oil separated out. The fragrance is milder than oil, and it is used for everything from a hair rinse to a room spray. And some claim therapeutic effects. We are offering our hydrosol for just $30 for these 25 ounce bottles, picked up here at the farm. Would you like one?

Taking blooms off the tuber beds to encourage a bit more growth below ground, and I just couldn't toss these to the ground. Carol knows what to do with them.

So even though we have closed the Farm-Stand at River Road Flower Farm, we still have a lot of blooms. Plenty enough to make the usual vases we take to our bank and the post office (but not enough to fill the Farm-Stand every day). But if you need blooms for a special event, we have you covered. It was a very good run this season. We had excellent color and size on the blooms, and Carol kept them disbudded so we had strong stems. Stems matter!!! But while it is time to shut down the farm-stand, we can still do special orders. Give us a call at 360-200-5571 and we will do our best. There are still a few weeks before the frost takes them.

Well it looks like it is time for us to call it for the season. We had a great cut yesterday, but Carol had to scour the patch to find good blooms for today. The lower light and cool days are making too many thin stems (and we just can't tolerate bad stems). So this is the last day for the farm-stand this season. We are luckier than many folks what with these occasional gray skies, as we are surrounded by color. And our colors today are autumn tinted. And we have plenty for you. By the stem for $2 and $3 at 1364 River Road in Sequim from 10 until 6 (Thur, Fri, Sat, and Sun).

Yesterday morning we had 37F in our raised beds at 0700. It was too close for comfort. And we had a bit of cold damage in the cut flower fields. There is a miniature atmospheric river - actually a trickle - that runs through the dahlias, and it burnt a few leaves. With any luck, we will make it to the end of the month. We will have plenty of blooms on Thursday. See you then.

So we had a low of 39.5 around 0500 this morning. A few degrees colder with a clear sky and frost is possible. Likely the same tonight. But unless we get a frost warning, we aren't going to fret. So we cut heavy on a few varieties, and we are pricing everything at $2 - even the larger blooms. TWO BUCKS 🙂. We are here until six at 1364 River Road in Sequim. Note new hours - closed on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday - but back Thursday.
