The dahlias in the cut flower field are well on their way. It won't be too long. This fawn thought the edge of the field was a perfect place to spend the afternoon.

We have been busy here on the farm. The greenhouse work is about done. New dahlias are all growing in pots, destined for the field or spending the summer in the pot for next season's pot tubers. The early dahlias for cut flowers are out of the ground and many a foot high. We rebuilt our irrigation system and pulled new lines for the lavender. And the lavender is looking pretty good, but still a few weeks before it's ready.

At River Road Flower Farm, we are winding down shipping. But we still have nice stock available. There are a few dozen Bloomquist Jean pot tubers, all growing nicely. And even a dozen regular BQ Jean tubers with nice sprouts. We pulled the somewhat ugly BQ Jean tubers into a couple of bundles - all sprouted - 14 for $125. Note the system will limit your “cart” to six items. The sprouts limit us to packing just six items in a box (and shipping is choking us :). And note there is an option for local pickup when you check out to bypass shipping fee.

It feels like we tend to be a day late and dollar short as they say. Hard to get everything done in a timely manner. These Bloomquist Jean pot tubers were destined for cuttings, but now the field. We have wrapped up our first round of shipping. They are all in the mail or waiting for local pickup. Our approach is a little different in that we make a very strong effort to ship a tuber that is growing. And sometimes that means a four inch sprout. These are delicate, but we pack them in peat and it seems to protect them from the sometimes rough handling on their journey across the country. We are going to get a count today and re-list a dozen or so varieties tomorrow, including Bloomquist Jean.

With dahlias it is important to ensure the buyer is satisfied. We are a licensed and inspected farm. And we make a focused effort to keep our stock free of the diseases that plague dahlias.

We are wrapping up our orders. The last of Pennsylvania, New York and Michigan today. Next week it is the cold states and the local pickups. If you are local and in a rush, drop us a note.

But there is a more important event coming up. Mother's Day is a couple weeks out. And we have the perfect gift. All of our Lavender Oils are special, but the oil from our Melissa Lavender is uncommonly so. Made from Melissa's pale pink flowers for a delicate, slightly citrusy essence. Use it as a perfume, a touch of lavender in drinks and desserts, or aroma therapy.

We are busy here at the farm. Juggling packing orders, propagating stock for the new dahlia field, and now getting the old field ready to start up. We are shipping the top half of the East Coast and Ohio and Indiana over the coming week. Local pickups are being packed in alphabetical order for the most part. They should all be done towards the end of this coming week. If you are in a hurry, drop us a note. The cold states are last. With any luck, we will be done by the end of the month.

The first photo is mostly Bloomquist Jean and some of the many new-to-us dahlias that we are growing this season. These are getting their final cut these next couple weeks. The pink lights are the first stop for new cuttings. They spend a week or so there and then move to the "day light" benches for another month or so. It's a process.
