Did you know… hanging certain fruits and vegetables can actually make them last longer? 🌱
Here’s why:
1. Better air flow = slower rot
When produce sits on a counter or in a bowl, moisture gets trapped underneath. That moisture feeds mold and bacteria. Hanging them allows air to circulate on all sides, keeping them drier and fresher.
2. Less bruising = less spoilage
Fruits like tomatoes, avocados, and apples bruise where they touch hard surfaces or each other. Those bruises are the first place rot starts. Hanging removes pressure points.
3. Natural ripening control
Some fruits (especially bananas) release ethylene gas, which speeds up ripening. Hanging them lets that gas disperse instead of concentrating and overripening everything nearby.
4. Mimics nature
Most fruits evolved to hang from
plants and trees. When we hang them, we’re keeping them in a form closer to how they were designed to exist.
Best produce to hang:
• Bananas
• Onions & garlic
• Tomatoes
• Apples
• Avocados
• Squash
Not ideal to hang:
• Berries
• Leafy greens
• Cut produce
It’s a simple old-school habit that reduces waste, saves money, and keeps your food closer to its natural state.
Funny how sometimes the best “new” food hacks are actually the oldest ones. 🌿
