The reason this is bad for the tree has more to do with keeping water against the trunk 24/7, but the mulch application is correct.

This pretty much sums it up. Most people have no idea how destructive "mulch volcanoes" can be. Pass it on!

Would any of you in Mesa be interested in having me cut a fresh Christmas tree for you? Up to 10' tall white fir, douglas fir, limber pine or ponderosa pine. $8/ft, plus $15 tag fee. Delivered the day it's cut, probably next week, unless you want it closer to Christmas. I may be limited to 6 requests, unless you order your own tag from the Black Mesa ranger district. Anyone interested?

People in the White Mountains love their trees, and we love them too. It can be a tough decision to remove extra trees, but doing so gives your home the best chance to survive another forest fire.
