Another big fenced vegetable garden completed in Hartsdale, with 4 cedar raised beds, 2 open plots for in-ground planting and generous paths for easy access to all corners of the garden. Deer fencing and rabbit fencing keep out critters large and small. A fun one to build and plant!

Rebuild vegetable gardens in all shapes and sizes, from fenced, deer proof, walk-in kitchen gardens, to simple raised beds like these. Sometimes all you need is a place to plant some seeds. It’s never too late or too early to plan — in fact, we already have carpentry projects booked for late fall. If you’re daydreaming about growing your own food, get in touch!

What’s dreamier than this? With 6 large cedar raised beds, a 6.5 foot fence, generously spaced paths, and automated irrigation, this garden has everything you could need for a bountiful summer harvest.

Each raised bed is planted using companion planting strategies that pair complementary vegetables, herbs and flowers — for example, planting tomatoes with borage, nasturtium, basil and garlic to deter pests. Companion planting adds biodiversity, increases harvests, and reduces the need for pesticides; I’ve always practiced this philosophy in my own gardens and I’m always happy to share it with clients and friends!

Serviceberries may be my favorite native tree to plant. They have bright white flowers in spring, edible berries in June, and great fall foliage. They are a real powerhouse in the pollinator garden, providing habitat for dozens of species of caterpillar and attracting berry-loving Mockingbirds, Catbirds, Orioles, Cedar Waxwings, Robins, Grosbeaks and Bluebirds. And with a maximum size of 20-30 feet, they fit into even small urban / suburban gardens. If there’s only space to plant one tree, this is almost always my first choice.

You don’t need acres of space to make a difference. Case in point — this sweet front yard transformation in Hastings-on-Hudson. Why mow a little front lawn when you can turn it into a pollinator paradise? The Rosewater crew started the day removing the grass and planting a mix of pollinator-friendly shrubs and perennials, including drought-tolerant herbaceous perennials like Russian Sage, Catmint and Creeping Thyme. Beneath the weeds, bedrock — and a birdbath! An unplanned feature of this project was uncovering this massive, beautiful bedrock hiding under a few inches of soil and a thick carpet of Mugwort & other invasive weeds. Our crew spent hours digging, scraping, and cleaning to get this outcrop on full display. Then we carved out a little wood chip path & planted native ground cover perennials to out-compete any weeds that try to stage a comeback. Swipe right for the before picture, and a visit from a curious Robin.

It’s been a sometimes tumultuous spring for the Rosewater crew but we are powering through garden projects at a rapid clip, including this big transformation in Hastings-on-Hudson. The first step in this project was some aggressive removal of invasive species, including bamboo, Rose of Sharon and our perpetual foe, Mugwort. Then we shaped new garden beds from the old lawn and planted an array of mostly-native plants which will bring life & color to this lovely home for years to come. Behind that little fence is a bird-friendly garden with lots of big, bold colors, including Royal Purple Smokebush, Amber Jubilee Ninebark & American Beautyberry. I’m excited to see how it all grows in this summer and in the years to come!

Phew! Over the last two weeks, the Rosewater crew has been working with and on a big lawn-to-meadow transformation in Dobbs Ferry. We removed the entire front lawn — more than 6,500 square feet — to make room for a new wildflower garden than will be a way station for butterflies, birds, and beneficial pollinators.

Over two days we planted more than 1,700 perennials and shrubs which will spread and compete to a create a real, living ecosystem on what was once lifeless lawn.

I’m very excited to see how this garden evolves this summer and in the years ahead. Many, many more pictures to come!
