Custom Railing. This was fun because I got to dabble a bit back into my restoration days. It only takes some imagination and experience to see what lies beneath.
I’ve made creations, and gifts for customers, from reclaimed, old lumber from their homes in the past, and have gotten an eye for seeing something beautiful that someone covered up with paint, or threw in a corner somewhere.
Rust doesn’t scare me either, I made a living out of restoring one of a kind items dating back many, many decades in our worlds history, for many years in the restoration and plating industry. So, fixing up the home’s original railing that was laying around was a breeze; plus a little flare of my own.
It had been off so long that the house had settled enough that it didn’t fit the opening any longer, just barely (3/8”), but enough it can’t be forced and ruin the Sheetrock. So my awesome neighbor buddy, Steve, helped me out and we trimmed it to length, and re-welded the tabs. From there, I cleaned it up real well and it got a fresh coat of paint to match the fireplace I’d just finished for the same customer.
Now, for the icing on the cake.
I could see this original railing cap was a piece of real nice, tight grained, clear fir….that someone painted…(blasphemy!!!!!! Grrrr 😆)
It had a good size chunk chipped off at some point but was recoverable.
So I milled it down with the table saw evenly on both sides by just a hair to remove that, then proceeded to uncover the gorgeous wood underneath.
For my own special touch for this customer, I turned this original 2x4 into a routed, burned, and stained rail cap to top off this now restored railing.
What a difference a little imagination makes with these pieces original to this 1980 built home.
It’s a small thing in the grand scheme of things, but I enjoyed being able to take this old thing and make it new again, and with a little something extra to add a little flare that it didn’t have before.
Fun little project!
