We want to show a couple diagrams on how heat pumps work. The first is how they work in the cool mode and the other is when the system goes into the defrost cycle. Your outdoor unit will start to freeze up around the outside of it and down around the compressor. Depending on how cold it is and if it is raining or wet out it could get bad. But your system is designed to go into defrost automatically, depending on how it is set on the defrost board. Also there is a sensor that will put it into defrost. If it doesn't remove all the ice from the unit you should call an HVAC company for advice on what to do. Have a great rest of the cold months and look forward for warmer days.
