With the incoming extended sub zero cold weather, there are a couple things you can do to make sure you do not get frozen pipes. Even though it is a rare occurrence, it is better to be safe than sorry.
1. Leave the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open under the sink, at night, especially if the sink is on an exterior wall. This allows warm air to circulate around the water pipes.
2. Keep the thermostat at 65 degrees. Many people lower the heat during the day when they are gone. This could cause it to get cold enough to freeze pipes.
3. Keep your overhead garage door closed. This is a major source of heat loss.
4. Let the faucet, on an exterior wall, slowly drip, at night.
If you do get a frozen pipe call a plumber immediately.
