Do the thing. Start that business. Stop making excuses. Mine were that the industry was too saturated. Too many guys fishing the same spot. Turns out 75% of those guys dont know how to fish. Youre only competing with 25% of the companys in your industry and those 25% will become your best friends who will give you the best advice. Its not what you think it is. Start your business. Just do it.

Take the step do the thing. Be the budget guy if it helps you grow but dont stay the budget guy forever. Keep adding value and be so reliable you become priceless for your clients.

And when youre eventually overwhelmed with work and start raising prices and start being called crazy. Just remember where you came from. Cutting yards for $80 a month on the weekends or after work.

A tip. Study study study. I take atleast 4 hours a day to listen to podcasts or books. There are tons of successfull people who started here and are now sharing there journey. STUDY. Turn your 2 pac off and LEARN

What gets done behind the scenes that does not get accounted for in your pricing.

Admin work. Hours spent behind the computer adding clients, adjusting schedules, adjusting invoices, uploading receipts, categorizing income and expenses, and other little things throughout the day.

Maintenance. Sharpening mower blades, washing the truck trailer and mower, maintenance on the truck and mower and trailers, cleaning out the truck and trailer every week, hauling trash and debris picked up throughout the week, so many other little things like tire pressure etc thats not thought about.

Taking calls and replying to clients. This eats more time than you think. If you take 4 45 minute calls a day thats almost 2 hours. Plus the 5 minutes replying to 10 texts.

When youre solo this can literally eat up 3 hours of your day even when combined with drive time. And also the 1 hour everyday after work you dont pay yourself to do.

Youre crazy. Use a crm you dinosaur. Thats customer relations management. I use GorillaDesk it does my scheduling, billing, messaging, auto notifications, and more.

Scheduling is nice because I set a winter biweekly schedule that is set to not run in summer then a summer weekly schedule set to automatically not run in the winter. This is amazing because only twice a year we have to touch it to just align the weeks and place everyone in the right time slots. Then i can track time and complete or skip within the app and the client will see everything in the portal.

Billing is nice because we bill on a monthly basis. So all we do is set a reoccurring invoice that automatically gets sent out on the 25th of every month. I have to touch nothing and half our clients are on auto pay. Meaning that same day the card OR bank is auto charged. No need to even think about it. Its amazing because now im not emailing and texting tons of clients asking about checks or cash or for payments. Its all automatic. Hands off. We even have is set to send out 2 more reminder messages through text and email automatically. So nobody has any excuses to any un notified late payments and when they are late a fee is automatically added. Its been gamechanging. Reoccurring and sent directly through text message.

Our office number is built into the app and everything is sent through that number. We have a dedicated phone number within the app for texting, invoices, updates, everything and when they call it automatically forwards the call to my phone (I do believe they have built in voip calling stuff) this in its self has been game changing too.

They have a ton of ai stuff but we pride ourself in having personal connections with everyone. So no ai yet but its always an option. This even comes with a free website. Crazy.

RESIDENTIAL VS COMMERCIAL

We used to be a residential and commercial company but as time goes on we build relationships and trust with our residential clients. These relationships we wouldnt trade for the world. We are soon to be a RESIDENTIAL ONLY lawn service company.

Why is this. Not all commercial but most commercial work is really tough of equipment and we take pride in making sure our equipment is always clean and in the best shape it can me. Doing this gives us the best results on our yards that our clients spend lots of time and money on to keep fertilized and looking green and healthy. We do our part but keeping clean equipment and fresh mower blades to not ruin all that hard work.

Also going residential only allows us to laser focus on your problems you may have. We dont dont have to book out an entire day to a commercial lot. We can them focus our time on a few properties a day to be sure the landscaping is always looking great. We know it can be frustrating when your lawn guy says "sorry its going to be 3 weeks before I get to those" well we have been there and were fixing that. We want to make sure your landscaping is always up to standards.

We love our residential clients. We love all the conversations and even the complaints. We dont ask for complaints but complaints help us grow and fix our mistakes and perform a much higher quality of service. We are ALWAYS looking to improve our work. Were not most company's who are scared off by customer complaints. We take them very serious and take pride in corrections.

I hope I can reach those of you who do sigh at the thought of a complaint and use this advice that a complaint is something to learn from not to sigh and be mad about.

FUEL SURCHARGE? we dont even know what that is.

We are all feeling the fuel prices right now. We dont believe in punishing our clients when theyre already upset about fuel prices. Fuel is maybe less than 10% of our costs. Filling the truck for the week went from $75 to $100. Filling the equipment went from $15 to $25 a day. We would rather cut back or pick up extra work to make the difference than punish our loyal customers when theyre already being punished with these prices.

We take care of our employees and our customers first before anything because you take care of us.
