Happy First Monday of January, Garden Friends!

A new year, a clean calendar, and a garden that’s quietly resting before the magic begins again. January is the perfect time to dream, plan, and prepare—whether that means sketching out this year’s beds, flipping through seed catalogs with a warm drink, or simply appreciating the beauty of winter in the garden.

This month is ideal for:
• Planning new garden layouts
• Taking stock of tools and tidying sheds
• Pruning dormant trees and shrubs (weather permitting)
• Starting a wish list for spring planting

Mark your calendars!
We’ll be kicking off the year with a fun outing on January 15th at 10:00 a.m. at Fretwell in Spartanburg, where we’ll be learning all about coffee with Little River Roasting—from bean to brew. A perfect mid-winter field trip (and excuse to caffeinate together).

Here’s to another year of growing together—learning, laughing, and getting a little dirt under our nails. We can’t wait to see what blooms in 2026 🌱

What’s one garden goal you’re setting for this year?

✨🌲 Winter Wonder Gardens: Keeping the Magic Alive 🌲✨
Even though the days are shorter and the temperature has dropped, your garden doesn’t stop growing — and neither should your creativity!

Here are a few fun + fascinating winter gardening tips to keep your green thumb warm this season:

🌱 Did you know?
• Some perennials need the cold — they rely on winter chill to bloom stronger in spring.
• Winter sowing (planting seeds outdoors in covered containers) can actually produce hardier seedlings than those grown inside.
• Evergreens don’t really “sleep” in winter… they just slow down their metabolism like little leafy bears 🐻🌲
• Snow? ❄️ It’s basically a natural “blanket” for plants — insulating the soil and protecting roots!

🎄 Add a little holiday sparkle to your garden!
• Create a winter planter with cedar, holly, nandina, pinecones, and a festive bow.
• Build a bird buffet with seed wreaths, orange halves, and suet to support winter wildlife.
• Add solar lights to highlight interesting bark and evergreens on long winter nights.
• Use colorful berries (winterberry, beautyberry) to keep pops of color glowing throughout the season.
• Try forcing bulbs like amaryllis or paperwhites indoors for a cheerful winter bloom 🌺

🧤 Garden Club Tip:
Winter is the perfect time for pruning, planning, and dreaming up those big spring projects. ✍️☕

So grab a cozy scarf, step outside, and enjoy the quiet magic of the winter garden — beauty doesn’t hibernate, it just gets frosted! ❄️✨

🎄✨ A Touch of Christmas Cheer! ✨🎄
Last week, our Fannie Louise Holcombe Garden Club had the joy of hosting a Christmas arrangement class at Rosewood Assisted Living in Pauline, and it was pure holiday magic.

Using fresh greenery clipped from our members’ own gardens — cedar, pine, holly, and all the fragrant treasures of the season — the residents created the loveliest Christmas centerpieces. Add in some twinkly ribbons, festive bows, and a whole lot of laughter… and suddenly the whole room smelled like a winter wonderland. 🌲🎀

Our members showed up with armfuls of clippings, buckets of supplies, and hearts ready to serve. And the residents? They absolutely shined. Watching everyone craft something beautiful for their rooms and doors was the highlight of our week.

A huge thank-you to Rosewood for welcoming us so warmly. Community outreach is at the heart of what we do, and these moments remind us why our little garden club is so special. ❤️

If you’d like to join us for future workshops, meetings, or volunteer projects, email [email protected] — we’d love to have you in our garden family.

🍂 Happy Monday, Garden Friends!

We’re officially in that funny little window before Thanksgiving week — where the pumpkins are still out, the mums are holding on for dear life, and we’re all pretending we’re not already planning our menus. 😄🧡

It’s a great time to:
• cut back what’s finished for the season ✂️
• gather herbs you want to dry or freeze 🌿
• check on any fall veggies that might surprise you with one more harvest 🥬
• and enjoy these last cozy days in the garden before the holiday hustle begins 🎃➡️🦃

If you're feeling thankful for your garden (or just thankful it made it this far), you’re in good company.

🌿 Fun Plant Facts to Brighten Your Day! 🌿

Did you know…
🌸 The smell of freshly cut grass is actually a distress signal? The scent comes from chemicals plants release when they’re damaged — kind of their way of calling for help!

🌻 Sunflowers aren’t just one big flower — they’re made up of thousands of tiny blooms, each capable of producing a seed. Every “petal” circle is really a perfectly packed spiral of mini flowers!

🍃 Bamboo can grow up to three feet in a single day. That’s faster than your favorite summer squash after a rainstorm!

🌼 The co**se flower (Amorphophallus titanum) blooms only once every few years — and smells like, well, rotting meat. It’s nature’s reminder that beauty sometimes comes with… bold fragrance choices.

🌱 Peanuts aren’t nuts at all — they’re legumes, and they grow underground like potatoes!

💧 And here’s a sweet one: morning glories bloom only for a single day, then close up forever — reminding us to make the most of each sunrise.

If you love little plant curiosities like these, join our newsletter to get more fun facts, tips, and local gardening updates straight from our members’ gardens. 🌼

🍂🎃 Wishing You a Beautifully Bewitching Halloween 🎃🍂

As the last of October’s leaves fall and the air turns crisp, we’re reminded that even in the quiet moments of the garden—there’s magic to be found. From the silvery shimmer of moonlit hostas to the soft rustle of drying seed pods, nature wears her own costume this time of year. 🌾🌕

Tonight, while the little ghosts and goblins wander through neighborhoods, we’ll be lighting our pumpkins, sipping something warm, and feeling grateful for the beauty that autumn brings to every garden and gathering. 🍁🕯️

May your evening be filled with gentle light, good company, and a touch of Halloween enchantment. ✨
