Our front garden area is quite messy because I don’t cut perennial plants down to the ground in the fall, but leave them standing for winter bird forage. There’s a whole flock of Juncoes feeding on all these exposed seed stems in this photo!!

Folks, I am sharing that we are shutting the nursery down as a business in September. The insurance required to run a farm business has made this endeavor unviable…thank you to all of my lovely plant customers for making it FUN! I will be selling my remaining inventory through September 30, including lots of big blooming perennials and shrubs including the gorgeous shrubby St. Johnswort! https://thbfarm.com/native-plant-nursery

Our website is open for pre-orders, although a few early birds have already snapped up some of the spring bloomers! We have very limited availability of native Turk’s Cap and Canada Lilies listed this year, plus a variety of native plants important for pollinators and declining species of Bumble Bees! Order now for pickup in May /June at our farm in Spencer MA. We are changing from a retail to a wholesale nursery later in 2023, so this may be your last opportunity to shop for native plants from THB Farm! https://thbfarm.com/native-plant-nursery

Busy in the new greenhouse these days, winter sowing native plant seeds which need cold stratification, such as Doll's Eyes (Actaea pachypody) and Virginia Spring-beauty (Claytonia virginica). These are both woodland natives that take up to 2 years until they germinate. After that, they take a few more years before they are ready for sale. Growing native plants from seed is a long-term commitment 😀

Excellent graphic on the right time to collect seeds from native plants.

Harvesting seeds from your native plants, and sharing them with your neighbors and friends, is a great way to create more biodiversity and habitat on a low budget. But always keep in mind: many critters rely on seeds as food, or seed heads as habitat, so always harvest modestly.
