Day 10 and 11 on this custom built-in project… and we are in the home stretch.

We did have to step away for a couple of days to handle another project, but everything was coordinated smoothly. This homeowner has been incredible to work with and made that transition easy.

Now… look at it.

Floor to ceiling custom shelving is in and painted in the exact color the homeowner selected. Clean. Sharp. Intentional. This is where the vision really starts to show up in full.

The fireplace is set and ready, and we are now waiting on the final pieces that are going to bring this whole thing together. The custom brick veneer for the fireplace and the doors for the lower cabinets.

Once those land, it’s go time for final assembly and finish.

If you’ve been following along since Day 1, you already know how far this space has come. If not, scroll back and watch the progression. This is what a real transformation looks like.

We’re close now.

What do you think of the color choice on the shelves?

And one more…

Would you go painted like this, or natural wood finish?

Drop it in the comments. I want to hear it.

Wwhhooaa… Day 9 in the books on this one.

Now it’s starting to hit.

Check out these floor to almost ceiling shelves. This is the kind of work that turns a plain wall into something people stop and look at.

You can see it coming together now… the height, the scale, the presence.

And we’re not done.

These shelves are getting a sliding ladder, recessed lighting, and everything is tying into that fireplace focal point that’s about to steal the show.

This is how you build something that doesn’t just fill space… it defines the room.

If you’ve been following along, you already know where we started. If not, scroll back and watch this thing come to life from Day 1.

Now I want to know…

What would you put on these shelves?

Books? Decor? Family photos? A mix of everything?

Drop it in the comments.

Day 8 on this build… and let’s talk about what it really takes.

Ever wonder how much sawdust comes from building custom cabinetry?

This is it.

This isn’t pre-made, boxed, or snapped together. These cabinets and shelves are being built from real wood products, cut, shaped, and fitted specifically for this home.

No press board. No shortcuts. No “make it work” pieces.

Every cut you see… every bit of sawdust on the floor… that’s the cost of doing it right.

This is the difference between something that looks good for a year and something that holds up and still looks right years down the road.

We’ve basically got a full shop running inside this house right now, while still keeping the rest of the home protected and livable.

It’s coming together strong.

Keep following this one. The finish work is coming next and that’s where this thing is really going to stand out.

Quick question…

Would you rather have real wood custom built-ins like this, or factory-made cabinets installed faster and cheaper?

Be honest. I want to hear it.

Day 6 and Day 7 update on this feature wall project.

This is where things start to come together in a big way.

Day 6 was about tightening up the details that most people will never see, but everyone will feel. We completed the drywall work in the upper sections that will sit behind the shelving. Clean, smooth, and ready for finish. This is what makes the final product look sharp instead of pieced together.

Day 7… big shift.

Base cabinets are now fully completed and the fireplace system is officially in. Firebox, gas logs, and fireplace unit are installed and set.

Now you can really see it.

What started as an empty wall is turning into a true focal point of the home.

This is the stage where everything starts stacking. Structure is in. Fireplace is in. Next comes the finish work that takes this from construction to craftsmanship.

If you’ve been following along, you’re seeing it happen step by step. If not, scroll back and check out where we started and the inspiration behind this build.

What do you think so far?

Would you put something like this in your home?

are going to love this finished project later this week.

Day 5 is in the books and this one is moving.

Base cabinets are built and in. Shelving is actively being built out. You can now clearly see the structure of this feature wall coming together.

This is the stage where everything starts to lock in. Layout, proportions, spacing. All the things that separate a custom built-in from something that just “fills a wall.”

The fireplace and firebox are scheduled to be installed Monday by one of our trusted partners. Once that goes in, this entire project is going to shift from construction to centerpiece very quickly.

If you’ve been following along, you already see where this is headed. If not, scroll back and check out where we started and the inspiration photo we’re working toward. The transformation is real.

What do you think so far? Would you go with open shelving, more closed cabinetry, or a mix like this?

If you’ve ever thought about doing something like this in your home, now’s the time to start the conversation. Send us a message and let’s map it out.

Day 4 and now it starts getting real.

This is where a project goes from “trust the process” to “ok… I see it.”

Custom cabinets and shelving are officially in build, and the first unit is set in place. You can finally start to see how this wall is going to come together and why the planning phase matters so much.

Everything you’re seeing is being built to fit this space exactly. No shortcuts. No pre-fab trying to make it work. This is custom, and it shows.

There is still a lot happening behind the scenes to make sure everything is straight, tight, and built to last, but this is the turning point where vision meets reality.

If you haven’t been following along, scroll back and check out Day 1 and Day 2, especially the inspiration photo. It will give you the full picture of where this is headed.

Stick with us on this one. It’s going to be a statement piece.

If this is something you’ve ever thought about doing in your own home, drop a comment or send us a message. We’ll show you what it could look like.

Day 3 of our custom built-in bookshelf and fireplace project.

Now we’re starting to see things take shape.

We began weaving new flooring into the area where the old tile was in front of the fireplace. This step is all about making the transition look seamless, like it was always part of the home and not a patch or afterthought.

We’ve also set up a full working “shop” inside the home so we can build efficiently on site. At the same time, we’ve taken care to isolate the rest of the home from dust and debris so the family can continue living comfortably during the project.

Today also marks the start of the custom work. We began building out the cabinetry and built-ins that will ultimately frame this entire space.

Included in today’s photos is the original inspiration image so you can continue to see where we’re headed as this comes together.

This is where the transformation really begins.

Follow along as we keep building. We've been posting daily for this project. Scroll back and catch up.

Day 2 update on our custom built-in bookshelf and fireplace project.

If you saw yesterday’s post, you got a look at where we started. If not, scroll back and check out Day 1 so you can follow the full progression of this transformation.

Today may not look like a big visual leap, but this is where good projects are built.

We laid out the plan for the new flooring that will replace the tile in front of the fireplace so everything ties in clean with the finished cabinetry.

The work area was fully contained to control dust and keep the rest of the home protected while we work. This matters, especially in a home with kids and pets.

We also made a full landfill run to clear out debris and keep the jobsite clean and efficient.

Behind the scenes, we continued planning and prep for the custom cabinetry and shelving that will become the focal point of this space.

Progress isn’t always flashy, but it is always intentional.

Scroll back to Day 1, follow along, and watch this come together over the next several days.

Project Series Introduction

We’re starting a new project this week that we’re excited to share with you.

Over the next several days, Fredericksburg Handyman will be transforming this space with a custom built-in wall featuring floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, cabinetry, a centered fireplace focal point, integrated lighting, and a sliding ladder.

This is the kind of project we love because it combines craftsmanship, design, and functionality into a centerpiece that completely changes the feel of a room.

Rather than just showing the finished result, we thought it would be fun to bring you along for the process.

Each day we will share a few photos showing the progress as this project comes together step by step.

Projects like this don’t happen overnight. There is careful planning, demolition, framing, cabinetry work, trim, lighting, finishing, and a lot of attention to detail along the way.

Estimated build time is about 7 to 9 working days.

Follow along this week as this wall transforms from a simple space into a custom feature the homeowners will enjoy for years.
