The Bloomarang Lilac first introduced in 2009 has become very popular. It has a small growing habit 4-5 feet tall, is fragrant, resists deer, and will bloom twice in one season: spring and then again later in the summer! An ideal plant for a smaller space

The Daphne shrub (Carol Mackie) can be a wonderful addition to the garden. It is low growing, about three feet high, and when it blooms in the spring gives off a wonderful fragrance. It blooms on old wood like the forsythia so pruning must be done after it blooms. They have a reputation for unpredictability and dying for no reason but even one season in the garden is worth it with them

Forsythia originally discovered in a garden in Japan is now cultivated all over the Northeast. When it begins to bloom it is time to get a pre emergent down on your lawn. The plant can grow 10 feet high and wide so it is nothing that you want planted against a house foundation and it often looks better planted with others in a border. It is best in full sun and if trimmed it should be done right after it blooms. Many prune it in summer into round ball shapes and lose the next spring blooms. Its natural shape is a cascading weeping mass.

Spiders are our friends in the landscape. They mostly eat insects. An estimate in the Journal of Science found they consume 400 to 800 million tons of prey a year. That means they eat more than all 7 billion humans on the planet. The total biomass of all humans on the planet is about 287 million tons. They eat 10% of their body mass daily which is equal to a 200 lb man eating 20 lbs of meat each day.

Remember the Gypsy Moth Caterpillers in the 80's. trees defoliated, driveways covered, people banding trees to keep them away. Well apparently they are back. The weather has combined to make it perfect for them and a fungus that often keeps them in check has been absent because it has been so dry. The population this year is the highest its been since the 80's and the experts expect next year to be worse.
