Butterfly W**d
Plant Height: 1’-2’
Plant Spacing: 1’-3’
Light Preference: Full Sun
Zones: 3-9
Price: $12

Asclepias tuberosa, or Butterfly W**d, is recognized for its bright orange flowers, which can also vary from deep red-orange to yellow. Its unique color and lack of milky-white sap, found in other Milkweed species, make it easily identifiable. It has narrow, dark green leaves that are up to 1 inch wide. Thriving in sunny, dry locations, this plant can produce up to 20 stems, averaging 2 feet in height, and is a favorite in gardens for its vibrant flowers and ability to attract butterflies. Additionally, Butterfly W**d serves as a larval host plant for monarch butterflies. It prefers well-drained soil and is drought-tolerant due to its deep taproot, which may cause it to be slow to emerge in spring, particularly in northern climates. While it can be transplanted during dormancy, care must be taken to avoid breaking the taproot, as it will not regrow if damaged. Can grow under Black Walnut trees and is deer-resistant
