Most animals avoid eating butterfly w**d because it has an unpleasant taste and can make them sick. However, monarch butterflies are attracted to this brightly colored perennial for laying their eggs. After the eggs hatch, the caterpillars consume the leaves and sometimes the flowers, despite the plant containing toxins that deter most creatures. The caterpillars can store this poison in their bodies to protect themselves from predators.

While there are many species of milkw**d that vary in size and flower type, butterfly w**d stands out with its vibrant blooms. It does not spread as aggressively as some other varieties and lacks the milky white sap that appears when the stem is broken in other milkw**ds.
