We took a bike ride today and observed some beautiful flowering elderberry.

Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) is a fast-growing but short-lived shrub in the honeysuckle family. It has fragrant flowers in the spring, and is a great plant to provide privacy in an urban area. It provides cover and food to many critters - birds, turtles, and squirrels often enjoy the berries. The berries are considered edible by humans when cooked, and elderberry jams, pies, and syrups seem to be having a resurgence of popularity. The foliage and immature berries are considered toxic to mammals, and it is somewhat deer resistant for that reason.

We have several sizes of elderberry available. The ones in the bigger pots are looking especially great, and ready for a new home. Email or message us if you are interested!

I (Clara) am often asked by people what my favorite flower is, and I have the hardest time answering. But this one is always in the running. This flower makes me feel warm and sunny, and reminds me of childhood days spent on my bike on county roads. Black-eyed Susan, Rudbeckia hirta.

Lane: "I want to start a plant nursery. I want to sell violets. People should replace their lawn with violets."
Clara: "People won't be flocking to buy violets. You should sell some other species too."

225ish species later....

Ironically, this is the first time we've had the common blue violet for sale. 😂

You can find them and about 100 other species tomorrow, 5/23, at Tower Grove Farmers Market.

Let's talk sedges: to the uneducated eye, a sedge looks like a grass. But "sedges have edges" -they have triangular stems, and often have distinctive seed heads. If you feel the urge to run your hands through the spikes, it's probably a sedge. They often grow in clumps. They are sources of food for moths, skippers, and butterflies. While they don't have showy flowers, they bring a wonderful texture to your garden. There is a sedge for every place.

We are bringing ninety-some species (including several sedges) of plants to the Plant Palooza sale at Point Labadie Brewery today. Come enjoy the day with us!

We humans aren't the only ones with spring fever I think. The birds in our yard have been really busy. I'm especially enjoying some bluebird visits to our windows every morning.
