The old water-based urethane just couldn’t hold up to the elements. This railing top needed to be completely sanded back to raw cedar. After making sure there was no remaining old finish and the surface was clean it was time for Gleam. A few coats later this cedar is prepared for whatever nature may have in store.

Wrapped up our first full exterior of the season and it feels great to get back outside after a long winter of interior work. This cape in the Monadnock Region looks great with a fresh coat of Lancaster White. But who are we kidding, the paint looks great but the landscaping is the real show-stopper!

As we wrap up another successful exterior season, as the days get shorter and the temperatures lower, we transition to the interior season. We look forward to the projects that are on the books and in the schedule but we still have room for a couple more. As the exterior painting season wraps up, the team took a well deserved break to soak up the beautiful fall scenery here in the Monadnock Region. We really are lucky to live in this idyllic place and to work with so many local clients.

It’s sometimes confusing to understand the process of properly painting a house. Each home is unique and requires different steps to achieve a beautiful and long lasting result. This home hadn’t been repainted in a very long time (decades) and the old coatings were failing. I would consider this an extreme case and I’m happy the owners decided to address it before all of the siding and trim would’ve needed to be replaced due to rot.

For this project the process was as follows:

1. Scrape as much of the old paint off as possible. Make sure the scraped surface is clean of any loose paint and dust.

2. Apply a high quality bonding primer such as Mad Dog Duraprime

3. Apply two coats of a high quality paint or stain. In this case the green was done with High Build Low Lustre

4. Repeat until the entire house is properly coated

As I mentioned, this house is an extreme example but if you’re at this stage with your home just know it’s not too late to save it. It’ll be much more labor intensive and cost more in materials but it will save you from a total siding replacement in the near future.

A good rule of thumb is to keep your house freshly painted every 7 to 10 years or at the first signs of paint failure. Hire a reputable painting contractor that uses high quality products (Ben Moore is our preferred brand). And understand that your home is most likely your most valuable asset and maintaining it is crucial for your investment.
