I couldn’t have explained why if my life depended on it. Then I spent thirty years learning not to trust the part of me that knew.

This one’s mine — not the brand. The Ben Busko Substack: founder, 35 years in. I make things work, then make them work again. New York City is home. The patterns I saw too early, the rooms that didn’t want me, a diagnosis at 34 that explained everything, and why the gut I spent decades doubting was right all along.

Some paintings start in the studio. This one was born in third grade.

Years ago, my teacher at Setauket School had a flower field in Old Field, right near the Old Field lighthouse— and I happened to take one photo of it- that I’ve never been able to forget. Cornflowers in that impossible blue. Cosmos leaning into the light like they had somewhere to be. My favorites, then and now.

There is nothing more romantic than a natural field of flowers. No arrangement, no design — just whatever the wind and the bees decided. I’ve been trying to paint my way back to that field ever since.

Some tables are 🍉 set. Ours is gathered.

There’s a particular alchemy to a long summer lunch — the kind that begins with good intentions at noon and surrenders, gracefully, to the golden hour. Where the watermelon sweats, the citrus perfumes the air, and the conversation outlasts the ice in the glasses.

These trays were made for exactly that. Handmade glass, decoupaged by hand in our Brooklyn studio, each one carrying a small story: a champagne cork mid-flight, a mahjong tile, a flag flying since ’76, the word Friendship in letters worn smooth by good company.

Old craft. New season. Made to be passed around a table until the candles burn low.

So we built him something he can’t regift — a toolbox that’s actually a love letter. Hand-decoupaged trays, a “Pops: The Man, The Myth, The Legend” stunner, and a “Dear Dad, I Love You” piece that’ll make him do the thing where he clears his throat and says “wow, this is really nice” and then changes the subject.
