One day, I told a customer that I like cool garages. So they asked me to make their garage cool. Here’s what I came up with. Since the completion, my customer (turned friend) has added cabinet doors and it looks even better! These are the kind of creative jobs that I love. Thank you to the owner of a cool new garage!

The photos below show a classic Aprilaire whole-home humidifier with a heavily mineral-scaled water panel. That crusty buildup isn’t dirt—it’s hard-water minerals that block airflow and evaporation. Once it looks like this, cleaning won’t restore performance.

Why it matters
• Reduced humidity output (even if the unit is “on”)
• Extra strain on the system
• Potential drain backups from flaking minerals

Best practice
• Replace the water panel once every heating season (twice if you have hard water)
• Rinse the tray and confirm the drain is flowing while it’s open
• Match the correct panel (commonly Aprilaire #35 for 700-series)

Bottom line: A $20–$30 annual pad swap keeps humidity comfortable and protects the HVAC—cheap insurance with big comfort payback.
