Before, during, and after. This cast iron register grate came from a 1903 American Foursquare home in Shelbyville, IL. Although its origin is uncertain, it was likely sand cast in a regional foundry somewhere in the midwest or Pennsylvania. Since being installed in the house 122 years ago, it was painted several times over with thick white enamel, hiding the intricate decorative elements. After sandblasting and careful application of several thin coats of primer and enamel, she is finally returned to former glory.

Painting in historic houses is always an experience full of interesting challenges. This room had it all: water stains on the ceiling, new drywall to be sanded, peeling latex paint that had been applied over oil based paint, and popping coatings around the windows from moisture intrusion. A lot of elbow grease and some new paint and she's brought back with a new look!

Waterproofing! This basement got three coats of a heavy oil-based waterproof coating, with every inch having to be meticulously brushed to work the paint into every nook and cranny as well as two coats of flat white paint to cover the spray insulation. Tough job!
