Pruning Flowering Shrubs
The ideal time for pruning flowering shrubs depends on the time of the year they bloom.
Prune late winter and spring-flowering shrubs after they flower. If you prune spring-flowering shrubs during winter, you will be removing flower buds. Primary examples in this category include azaleas, spiraeas, and garden hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla). Many times we are doing height reduction pruning via topping methods when it would be best to use a limited amount of thinning cuts to maintain better plant shape.
For spring-blooming azaleas, complete pruning by late June or early July. For multi-seasonal blooming azaleas, complete pruning within 4 weeks after the spring bloom is completed.
Prune summer-flowering shrubs and small trees from mid to late winter before spring growth. Some plants in this group are crape myrtles, oleanders, vitex and altheas.
Most non-flowering evergreens should be pruned in the dormant winter season, but some pruning can be done at other times as needed.
