Aeration is one of the most important things you can do for your lawn.
It’s a safe bet that the most beautiful lawns you see here in the Piedmont are ones that are aerated and seeded in the fall. Because of the heavy clay content of our soil, compaction is a problem, preventing oxygen from reaching the roots of the grass plants, causing the plants to develop shallow roots and making the plant more susceptible to drought, heat and disease stress.

Aerating (removing cores of soil) helps break up the compacted soil, providing oxygen for the roots and helps develop a rich topsoil. Your grass will have greater nutrient uptake giving you better and deeper root growth. Aeration can be done in spring or fall. Spring aeration prepares your lawn to respond better to spring and summer nutrient applications, and absorb irrigation and rainfall with less runoff or puddling.
Fall seeding is required to maintain dense, healthy strands of grass. The average life cycle of fescue is about 3 years and every year, the normal fescue lawn loses about 1/3 of grass; it only makes sense to replace what’s lost.
