August 6th 2026 We had the pleasure of attending our first Topping Out Ceremony for one of our projects, The Jackson County Justice Center. The topping out ceremony originated over 1000 years ago when Scandinavian builders would place an evergreen on new buildings to ward off evil and thank the forest spirits. Timber builders would place a pine tree atop their builds to indicate when the wood frame was fully dry. Now, with steel and iron frames, the tree is a symbol of growth, luck, and safe passage through the project.

Another fun fact, the last beam is painted white to allow for all parties involved to sign and become part of the building's history!

If you look carefully at the last photo, note the railing above our heads. This design element shows a traditional Cherokee basket weave pattern added into the building's architecture to represent the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians and mimics the design of the copula of the historic Jackson County Courthouse. This was designed by architect Mahaley Odell Thompson.
