Banisteriopsis caapi aka the ayahuasca vine is a plant that is used throughout the Amazonian region alone or in combination with Psychotria viridis to form ayahuasca. The vine and leaves contain several beta carbolines namely harmine, harmaline, and Tetrahydroharmine. These alkaloids act as reversible inhibitors of monoamine oxidase A( RIMA sometimes abbreviated MAOI).
Much of the effect of ayahuasca is due to the ability of ß-carbolines to inhibit MAO (monoamine oxidase) enzymes.2,3 This inhibition makes it possible for the psychedelic compound DMT (dimethyltryptamine, another compound in ayahuasca) to move out of the digestive system and enter the circulation.
When taken alone, shamans say that Banisteriopsis caapi helps enhance people’s empathy, allowing them to give guidance in the community
