I received a runty and malnourished Philodendron Ghost 2 years ago. It is FINALLY putting out sizable leaves AND a white one at that.
This is a big deal bc the leaves that were growing in the beginning were less than an inch in size. Not sure what trauma it endured before reaching me but it is safe to say the healing journey has been a success!

Two of my absolute favorites (Aspidistra vietnamensis 'Seiun' aka “Star Cloud” & Aspidistra vietnamensis 'Amanogawa' aka the real “Milkyway”) are finally thriving from a long propagation process.
Aspidistras are sooooo slow growing but makes the wait oh so worth while 💚

Aspidistra grandiflora 'Big Spotty' is our first introduction of the Vietnamese cast iron plant, which was only identified as a new species from southwest of Hanoi in 2007. Aspidistra grandiflora 'Big Spotty' forms an 18" tall x 2' wide specimen of glossy green, 4" wide leaves, each heavily spotted with large, bright yellow dots. In June, watch the soil at the base of the leaves for the appearance of the amazing flowers that look like giant yellow spiders sunning themselves.

Philodendron Verrucosum leaves are absolutely stunning to stare at. Their velvety texture add a tactile luxury most plants don’t offer. They are well worth the extra care need for them to thrive for those wanting a little extra pizazz added to their collection.

More Aspidistra, aka., not your typical cast iron plant, appreciation post.
I just added A. elatior ‘Amanogawa’, which means “Milkway”, and A. vietnamensis ‘Seiun’, aka “Star Cloud”.
Amanogawa is the true ‘Milkway’ cast iron plant unlike the non-striped Milkway (A. elatior ‘Ginga’) that’s commonly sold at retail nurseries. ‘Ginga’ means galaxy in Japanese and that’s what causes the confusion with it being labeled “Milkyway”.
The foliage of the true Milkyway would be hard to confuse with any other cast iron. The variegated stripes and spots earn it it’s name as the true Milkway cast iron and it’s absolutely stunning.
The Star Cloud cultivar is nothing to scoff at either. The speckles on their foliage looks illuminated, like glowing green embers.
The breeders of these cultivars know what they are doing!

Looking forward to the day that these cultivars are readily available 🤩

Who’s been sleeping on Aspidistras?! This plant group has been wrongfully looked over as a throw away landscape plant.
Aspidistra has a rich history and once prized Victorian parlor plant.
Only in the last couple of decades have a few growers begun hybridizing these amazing and indestructible plants.
Most plant folks are familiar with the Aspidistra Elatior varieties (i.e., common green, variegated.) However, lots of Aspidistra cultivars, like the speckled one pictured— Aspidistra Sichuanensis ‘Rawhide’, hold great ornamental value.
Venturing past the undeserving title of “utilitarian” shade plant, one will find an entire collection of anything but utilitarian foliage. There are literally hundreds of Cultivars of Aspidistra. Because of there obscurity a lot of mystery and mislabeling are prevalent with purchasing these beauties.
This genus is definitely worth the research for any interest plant collector and enthusiasts—
Especially, for anyone looking to go down a rabbit hole of plant nerd information.
