Rebuilt a set of step that were in desperate need of replacement. The old ones the wood was sitting directly on the ground causing them to rot. We poured a 4” concrete pad, reinforced with rebar and then built the second step with pressure treated southern yellow pine. The customer is going to back fill the bottom step and paint the upper one themselves.

This is one of my favorite things we’ve got to build this year for one of our excellent customer. This kitchen was lacking in counter and cabinet space (we will be revamping the rest of the kitchen in the future), the easiest option for now was to add an island. We worked with the customer for about a week designing this (also how it will work with the furniture layout). We also added the light, the customer had the wires ran for this a while back we just had to add the light. I wasn’t sure about the Sherwin-Williams Rosemary color on the cabinet when he picked it but I think it turned out incredible in the space and with the lighter butcher block top.

Installed new metal closet rods in this very large walk in closet, pretty sure I’ve had bedrooms smaller than this closet. It had wooden rods but they were bending under the weight and brackets in the smaller bays would have looked awkward. Metal rods aren’t cheap but they do look great. We also removed a couple shelves so the customer had room for some longer dresses.

We’ve done a little work at this house the past couple weeks. New countertop, sink and mirror in the bathroom. Painted three rooms and replaced some ceiling fans. We used Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint on the walls and ProClassic on the trim, this is my favorite combination for painting residential homes.

Some days you show up to work and everything goes as planned other days you show up for a 4-5 hour appliance job and 8 hours later you’re still not done. Microwave hood went in easy, which is surprising because sometimes those can be a pain. Cooktop was slightly larger than the old one and the cabinets was a little small, got it to fit but took some work. Oven went in pretty easy but is 2” short, customer will be having us renovation the cabinets later this year, we can easily make the rail above it 2” bigger, we’ll go back before and put a piece of trim in until then.

Then we did the dishwasher last. The tile was done after the dishwasher was installed, it was also installed over the original linoleum (big no no). To top that off the dishwasher was probably a tight fit before the tile. There was no way to take it out without removing 3 pieces of tile. Luckily when the customer purchased the house there were extra tiles for the floor. Get the old one out, lower the legs all the way on the new one go to put it in and it’s still 1/4” to tall and it’s a top control so it need a little clearance so that if someone leans on the counter the buttons don’t get pressed. We had to cut the front lip of the cabinet up about 1/2”, the laminate edge was loose so we were able to pull it off cut the wood, we’ll cut the laminate and reapply it when we come back. Once everything was cut the dishwasher slides right in. But the old dishwasher had the handle built in to the front, the new one the handle stick out, so the bottom three drawers to the left open just fine but the top drawer runs into the dishwasher. Talked to the customer about it, he’s fine with having to open the dishwasher to open that drawer for now, hopefully when we renovate the cabinets we can figure out something. We need to go back to figure out the trim on the oven and put the tiles back in, but everything in the kitchen is functional.

These new Whirlpool appliance are a huge upgrade from the 40+ year old appliances that we pulled out. I really like these short microwave hoods, this is the second one I’ve installed. They fit almost perfect match size wise to the old exhaust hood, maybe 1-2 taller. But close enough that you can go from an exhaust hood to a microwave hood without having to modify cabinets. The microwave is short, but it’s plenty tall to reheat leftover. So unless you’re trying to cook a whole chicken in the microwave I think they’re plenty tall for any normal use. Probably going to put one of these in my house if I ever get around to finishing my 3 year long kitchen remodel.

Finally have the subfloor prepped in this house (basically everything, one small sunroom that has to wait till the rest of the flooring is installed). In a perfect world you lay this self-leveling concrete all at once, but the customer is living in the house, so we do what we have to to accommodate the customer. When doing this in multiple pours our laser level becomes very necessary. Next step flooring, we have the master suite done but still a ways to go. The nice thing is if you do your prep good like we did the rest goes way smoother and quicker. Take the time upfront and do it right.

Finally getting flooring down at this house. A lot of times with flooring jobs the prep takes 2-3x as long as actually laying the floors. This house we’ve poured nearly 3000 pounds of self-leveling concrete. On a slab house like this if the slab isn’t perfect and you lay a glue down LVP like this, it will show everything. Though the finish layer is what you’ll see for years, what’s under matters more.
