Current project wrapped up. This beautiful 5” Select Grade Hickory floor was installed using a full-spread glue system with cleat assist for a rock-solid install. Once sanded, I finished it with a waterbase system to keep the wood looking light, natural, and clean with a modern touch.

A sharp final addition to this client’s freshly built dream home.

Jobsite #2 of 3 this week.

A good buddy installed a unique end-grain fir floor and brought me in to handle the sanding and finishing. Pushed a little OT to get it wrapped up for him.

He went with a plant-based, penetrating/hardening oil system. Solid product, but definitely a hands-on process with multiple steps to get the final result dialed in.

Second one I’ve done over the years. Always a treat to work on something different.

This week’s project.

Out with the carpet and particle board and in with something built to last.

prepped the subfloor, applied a roll-on moisture barrier, then installed this stunning 8” wide #1 Common Red Oak using a full-spread glue system with nail assist for maximum hold and stability.

Finished it with a water-based system, lightly tinted with whitener to soften and tone down the oak’s natural warmth—leaving behind a clean, modern look that still lets the wood shine.

The view was tempting this week, but progress doesn’t make itself. This prefinished 5” walnut floor had been completely washed out and sun-bleached. After a full, aggressive overhaul, it’s back to what walnut should look like. Rich, warm brown with the depth and character it deserves.

Two projects. One busy week.

Project 1: Sand and refinish of a small kitchen and dining area featuring uncommon Beech flooring always a pleasure to bring this species back to life.

Project 2: Sand and finish of a freshly installed, random-width pegged White Oak floor. A classic look from the 70s and 80s. Fun to see this style making a comeback under the sanding machines.

Project of the week.

Back at a home I originally worked on 20ish years ago, this time bringing new life to the same 2-1/4” red oak. Sanded it down to bare wood and completely refreshed the look, shifting from the original oil based tone to a lighter, more modern finish.

To achieve that clean, updated feel, I incorporated a whitener into one of the finish coats, brightening the floor while still letting the natural character of the red oak shine through.

Before & After — This Week’s Project

Sanded and refinished this white oak floor that I originally installed & finished 20 years ago when this home was built—back when I worked for another company. Two decades later, still standing strong and ready for another long run.

Two-week project coming to a close. Australian beech I picked up back in September, now fully installed as new flooring throughout. Raw lumber was custom-milled on site into stair nosing and stair components, with the client’s garage converted into a full makeshift shop.

Like 90% of the staircases I run into, this one was way out of code — so the entire run was corrected and rebuilt properly.

Finish coats tomorrow and Friday, then it’s on to the next one. 👊🔨

Before & After photos.

Jobsite of the day and a half. Client of a recently finished installation called back and asked if I could upgrade the first step and landing on their stair case. Sure! Beings I had this week goofed up with a reschedule, I was able to jump on it and knock it out.

Final job for 2025, rolled into end of this week. Older late 90’s/early 2000’s prefinished white oak with a very heavy micro bevel.
Ended up drum sanding this 6 times starting with 16grit cross cut, (2) 24grit bias cuts, (3) 36 grit straight line cuts just to get down past the bevels. Finished it out and coated with a natural waterbase.
Turned out fantastic!
