🌿 Summer Plant Health Spotlight: Aphid Management & the Power of Ladybugs 🌿

Summer is here—and so are aphids, one of the most persistent and damaging garden pests. These tiny sap-suckers can wreak havoc on trees and shrubs, stunting new growth and spreading disease if left unchecked.

🐞 Nature’s Little Helpers: Ladybugs

We love seeing ladybugs in the landscape! These natural predators are a beautiful and beneficial way to reduce aphid populations. Just one ladybug can eat up to 50 aphids a day, making them a gardener’s favorite ally.

That’s why we often encourage beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings as part of a healthy, balanced ecosystem.

BUT… When Nature Needs a Boost 🌳

Sometimes aphid infestations get out of control, overwhelming your plants and outpacing what ladybugs alone can handle. In these situations, we turn to targeted systemic treatments—applied safely and precisely to protect your landscape without harming pollinators or pets.

Systemic insecticides:
• Get absorbed by the plant to protect from the inside out
• Provide long-lasting protection during peak infestation months
• Minimize the need for broad-spectrum sprays

🛡️ Our Integrated Approach

We believe in Integrated Pest Management (IPM)—a strategy that uses the least invasive, most effective tools to protect your landscape. That means:
• Monitoring for aphid hotspots
• Encouraging beneficial insects like ladybugs 🐞
• Using systemics only when needed, and only where they’ll be most effective

📸 We’ve been spotting lots of ladybugs lately! Check out some of our favorites below. Got some of your own? Tag us—we love seeing what’s happening in your yard!

🌳✨ Tree Spotlight: The Golden Rain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata) ✨🌳

Looking for a tree that brings drama and charm to your landscape? Meet the Golden Rain Tree — a true four-season standout! 🌼🍂🌰

💛 Why We Love It:
In midsummer, when most trees are taking a break, this beauty bursts into long clusters of bright yellow flowers, resembling golden rain cascading from the branches — hence the name. These flowers give way to fascinating papery lantern-like seed pods that turn from green to a rich coppery pink by fall. Even in winter, its shapely silhouette and textured bark add visual interest.

🌿 Fast Facts:
• 🌎 Native to: Eastern Asia (China, Korea)
• 🪴 Mature Size: 30–40 ft tall & wide
• ☀️ Light Needs: Full sun
• 🌱 Growth Rate: Moderate
• 💧 Water: Drought-tolerant once established
• 🏙️ Urban Friendly: Tolerates pollution, compacted soils, and heat

🌬️ Bonus: It’s one of the few trees that offers color and interest nearly year-round, making it a favorite for parks, streetscapes, and low-maintenance yards

Tree Profile: Palo Verde (Parkinsonia florida) 🌵
The Desert’s Living Sculpture

Meet the Palo Verde, one of the desert’s most iconic and resilient trees. Known for its bright green bark, airy canopy, and golden spring blooms, this tree isn’t just beautiful—it’s built for survival.

✅ Fast Facts:
• Common Name: Palo Verde (“Green Stick” in Spanish)
• Botanical Name: Parkinsonia florida
• Native Range: Southwestern U.S. and Northern Mexico
• Height/Spread: Typically 15–25 ft tall and wide
• Lifespan: 50–100 years with proper care

🌿 Unique Features:
• The green bark contains chlorophyll, allowing the tree to photosynthesize even after dropping leaves during extreme drought.
• The delicate, fern-like leaves are drought-deciduous, dropping in dry conditions to conserve water.
• In spring, it bursts into vibrant yellow flowers, supporting pollinators like native bees and hummingbirds.

🌞 Why We Love It:
Palo Verde trees are low-water heroes—perfect for xeriscaping and sustainable landscapes. Their sculptural form adds a striking silhouette to any property, and they’re excellent for erosion control on slopes or in arid climates.

🌱 Care Tips:
• Water deeply but infrequently once established.
• Prune sparingly to maintain structure—avoid heavy topping, which weakens the tree.
• Prefers full sun and well-drained soils.

⚠️ Watch Out For:
• Overwatering or poor drainage can cause root rot.
• Improper pruning may lead to weak branch unions or breakage in high winds.

💡 Did You Know?
The Palo Verde is the pea family (Fabaceae) which means it makes its own nitrogen! It means it plays a vital role in desert ecosystems, offering shade and habitat for wildlife both above and below ground.

Tiny Predator, Big Impact!

Check out this baby praying mantis we spotted in one of our client’s trees! This little hunter may be small, but it’s a powerful ally in keeping landscapes healthy and pest-free.

Praying mantises are just one example of beneficial insects that naturally help control harmful pests. Supporting these natural predators is a smart and sustainable way to protect your trees — and it’s exactly the kind of approach we take with our Plant Health Care (PHC) programs.

🌳 With a professional PHC plan, we can:
✅ Monitor for early signs of pest issues
✅ Use targeted, eco-friendly treatments
✅ Promote natural predators like this one
✅ Improve tree vigor and resilience year-round

A healthy landscape starts from the ground up — and with the right care, you’ll see fewer pests, stronger growth, and longer-lasting beauty.
