Day 3 of living outside, and while it’s far from comfortable, I know it could be so much worse. Our animals are doing well, and we still have some fish and sandwich supplies, which I’m incredibly thankful for. We’re running low on water, but we should be able to find more without too much trouble. The nights are cool, and that’s been a real blessing.
I can’t help but think of those who have absolutely nothing out here. It breaks my heart. We’ve lost almost all of our food, yet I’m reminded that there are so many people who’ve lost so much more. Some of our friends have lost their entire homes, yet they still find ways to extend a helping hand to others. That kind of humanity is what keeps hope alive in the face of devastation.
I’m so grateful for the linemen working tirelessly to restore power and for the search and rescue crews working around the clock to save lives in Cedar Key, Steinhatchee, and beyond. These efforts are nothing short of heroic.
Yes, we’re all feeling the strain of having no power, but we know that there are those who don’t even have homes to go back to, let alone lights to turn on. Those are the people who need our help first.
Hurricane Helene has been devastating, but the strength and compassion of our community remind me how fortunate I am.
