Came across this on TikTok and I had to share it. What a beautiful idea.
Meyer Perennial Pollingtor Mix
A few months ago I wandered over when Roderick & Sons Tree Specialist was taking down my neighbor's tree. Like any homesteader would, I asked:
"Got any spare wood?"
Score! A nice pile of firewood.
But then I looked at the truck loaded with wood chips and asked, "What are you doing with all those?"
The answer? They were headed to a muddy farm... and they were going to PAY to dump them.
I said, "I'll take the whole truckload!"
The funny part? I had been on the Chip Drop list since September and hadn't gotten a single load.
Fast forward to today, and those "waste" wood chips became a butterfly garden, perennial pollinator habitat, and Hugelkultur mound It gets even better...
The chips came from the neighbor on one side whose tree fell. The log wall idea came from the tree that fell on the other side. I had a blast cutting it up with the chainsaw and turning it into part of the project.
And today, the neighbor across the street offered me a bunch of tall reed grass they were thinning out.
My response?
"Drop it at the wall!"
What started as a free pile of wood chips has turned into a community-built ecosystem. Every neighbor has unknowingly contributed something to this project, and it's becoming one of my favorite spots on the property.
Who else sees "yard waste" and immediately starts planning a new project?
