Cleaning some Prairie Dock (Silphium terebinthinaceum) this first snowy morning in NW Ohio. This reminded me of a recent conversation on not all seeds are created equal. With NW Ohio experiencing a drought this summer, it also impacted seeds. Just like our children (offspring), they are not all the same. Think Darwin here..some are weak and some are strong. That does not mean the weak do not have a purpose, they may be better suited for a wetter environment (in this year's case). How can you tell a strong and healthy seed? They are darker, plumper, and built to survive..at least what mother nature is predicting for next season. She seldom shares her secrets. She is not always correct, so be sure to include some of each. Which pile do you think has the survivors?
