Here's a vanished view of the 400 block of N. Washington Avenue: the Italianate home on the left was the residence of Thomas Dickson, and provided him a perfect vantage point high on the hill near Vine Street to overlook his vast industrial complex of the Dickson Manufacturing Works clustered around Penn Avenue. After Thomas' death in 1884, his wife Mary remained in the house until her death in 1917. The house was then used by the Scranton Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Girl Scouts. It, along with the next-door home of Harry Coursen, was razed in 1927 to make way for construction of a grand Masonic Temple and Scottish Rite Cathedral.
