I am MOVING again in a month. I love my million dollar view of the Pacific and the redwood deck but I need organic studio space down in Santa Cruz. It will be "rustic" (a polite word). I have an eye for the salvaging space that most people think non-redemptive. Give me a broken flor, bad windows, br...

REDWOOD PASSES FIRE TEST
Redwood has been thoroughly tested and has found to be safe and compliant with California most recent and strict fire codes. The tannins and natural resistance that protect redwood trees in forests also protect redwood decks against fire.

Going beyond anecdotal evidence that goes back decades, redwood decking has performed extremely well in flame-spread and heat-release lab tests and has earned a Class B compliance rating, which means redwood decking is safe to use even in the Wildland-Urban Interface. Redwood decking is also listed in California's Fire Marshal's guide of approved building materials.

In a series of fire performance tests conducted on 12 commercial decking materials, California redwood ranked number one in flame resistance. The tests, completed by the University of California Forest Products Laboratory (UCFPL), were designed to evaluate the performance of decking materials exposed to wildland fire hazard conditions.

Construction Heart 2x6, the most widely used redwood decking material in California, was the only product that exhibited no degradation effects such as runaway flaming combustion, flaming drops or particles falling from the deck or collapse of a deck board with or without load during the long exposure tests according to Professor Frank Beall, Director, UCFPL.

REDUCING EMMISSIONS
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a great way to address climate change, and using redwood is a great way to reduce carbon emissions.

As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Through photosynthesis, the carbon gets stored in wood fibers in the tree's roots, trunk and branches and the oxygen is released back to the air. The faster a tree grows, the more photosynthesis occurs and the more carbon is removed from the atmosphere. Since redwood is a fast-growing species, managed redwood forests excel at removing carbon from the atmosphere.

A redwood deck can store a half-ton of carbon.
When trees are harvested, the carbon they captured continues to be stored in the redwood decking, fencing and other wood products they become. In fact, wood is about half carbon by weight. Wood lasts a long time, keeping that carbon safely out of the atmosphere for years, and eventually can be recycled. Managed forests are regenerated, so more carbon is removed from the air by the newly planted trees, continuing a cycle of carbon removal and storage.

Using energy-efficient natural wood products that store carbon instead of energy-intensive manufactured products that release carbon can lower your carbon footprint.
