As the summer heat arrives, we are pleased to share photos of a recently completed pool/guest house which the owners graciously allowed Tom Wuelpern to photograph. The clean-lined geometry of the exterior calls to mind David Hockney paintings. The walls built from mortar-washed slump block, laid with a random pattern of staggered block, match the texture of the walls of the 1970’s hacienda-style main house on this northeast Tucson property. Inside, the integral color plastered walls of a dark charcoal hue are a sueded backdrop to the artwork of the owners and the Noguchi-style pendant lights. An efficient use of a compact space that still manages to feel roomy.

31 years ago today, PureBuild became incorporated in the state of Arizona. In the intervening years, we’ve built well over 100 homes - from rural, sometimes off-grid projects throughout Southern Arizona (including in Santa Cruz, Cochise and Pinal county), to custom homes in premier subdivisions, to homes in Tucson’s urban heart in Barrio Santa Rosa and the Mercado District. The homes across a range of locations and architectural styles, the constants of our craft are building energy efficient, regionally appropriate homes. We’ve also acted as a rammed earth wall subcontractor on dozens of residential and commercial projects. After 31 years, PureBuild is in its prime (prime number, ha, ha)! We’re not ready to slow down, but if we were, some of the delightful bedrooms we’ve built would be splendid places to retire to. Thanks to all our fabulous clients who’ve entrusted us with manifesting their vision.

Happy Earth Day! This photo of our former office displays many of the attributes we apply when designing and building a home, such as energy efficient wall systems (rammed earth), low maintenance finishes (concrete floors, metal roof, metal clad wood windows by Marvin Windows), and drought tolerant landscaping. 🙂

We recently completed another house in the Mercado District. The calm color scheme of this home aligns with the owners’ Cape Cod roots. They sourced their bamboo flooring in “brushed pearl” from Natasha at Originate Natural Building Materials and co-created the stain glass window with Estelle at Tucson Stained Glass. A very tranquil ambience permeates the property.

The Wall Street Journal sent a Valentine to Tucson last week. In a travel feature, journalist Daniel Weiss called the Mercado San Agustin one of Tucson’s “buzziest downtown districts”. PureBuild’s Tom Wuelpern was one of the founding visionaries responsible for the development of this neighborhood and we are so pleased it is being highlighted as a travel-worthy destination.

Our project foreman, Garth Goebel, took these photos of our latest wall project on Valencia Rd. Dye added to the rammed earth mixture creates beautiful striations of color so the compaction layers become a design feature.
