The Wild Midwest: Heritage Livestock and Native Plants

The Wild Midwest: Heritage Livestock and Native Plants The Wild Midwest grows plants native to the midwest along with raising heritage livestock.

The Wild Midwest creates regenerative designs using plants native to our area in Central Illinois, and we sell a large selection of seed grown plants from wild type genetics. The focus of our designs are: building healthy soil, preserving and enhancing nutrient cycling, creating wildlife habitat, mitigating climate change, supporting the food web so critical to life on the planet, and cleaning and

preserving our water resources. We offer designs for many different scales of project, from a small ornamental garden in an urban yard to a multi-phase site plan for several hundred agricultural acres. We grow our own plants from seed to sell, and we can find plants for you that we're not able to grow ourselves. Gardening and farming with natives is unique; we want to educate and empower people to do it themselves, increasing the biodiversity of the spaces we inhabit and healing what is damaged on our precious and stunning planet.

Macy can ship! Support several small businesses (including myself) at once when you order from Macy. She gets her raw materials from local farms and butchers to bring you farm fresh treats for your dogs. I can attest that rabbit is one of our dogs absolute favorite treats!

ALL SPOKEN FOR

I have at least one, potentially 2, welsh harlequin hen with some color faults I'm looking at selling. She is about 6 months old and should come into laying any day now. She's unproblematic in the flock, doesn't seem to quarrel with anyone. She is from a mixture of show quality and hatchery lines. Who I suspect is her mother is an excellent egg layer even at 3 years old.

I also have a variety of drakes, some show quality, if anyone is interested. Drakes range in age from 3 to 5 months, some pure show quality lines, some a mix of show and hatchery lines. All purebred welsh harlequin silvers.

3️⃣0️⃣ for the hen. 2️⃣0️⃣ for a drake. 4️⃣5️⃣ for the pair if you get one of each.

The Hot Lips pink turtlehead, Cheloni lyonii 'Hot Lips', is starting to bloom! This one grows in rich medium to moist soil in full sun to part shade (tolerates close to full shade but might need staking in that much shade). It also can be grown as a marginal pond plant like this one!

It is listed as getting up to 4 feet tall, but it is much more commonly only about 2 to 3 feet tall and 1.5 to 2 feet wide. It is upright with no need for staking unless it is in heavy shade.

The foliage is a rich green, almost chocolatey. And as you can see, it blooms when the summer flowers have mostly stopped and before a lot of the fall flowers begin. It is quite a striking plant.

We do have a few left in half gallon size.

Hello everyone! We have some new followers, so I thought I'd give another overview of how ordering works. This is a hobby for me, I do it out of my home on the side of a full time job and other hobbies, so I've set up my order pickup procedure to take the least amount of time and effort from me so I can dedicate more time to sourcing and growing the widest variety of hard to find native plants I can.

We also will have a few welsh harlequin ducks and silver fox rabbits available periodically as well (as we lean more into the livestock side of our name!)

But back to the plants. For orders, please email me the species and quantities you want at [email protected]. I will then let you know if we have the quantities needed to fulfill your order or if we need to make any adjustments. Then I'll send payment and pickup instructions once you have confirmed your order and what day you want to pick up.

Pick up is contactless. I have had too many people not show up on time or at all to try to set appointments for pickup anymore. Again, if I'm dedicating a ton of time to pickup appointments, that is less time I have to devote to the actual growing and care of the plants!

I know this isn't the kind of system people are used to from regular businesses, but we aren't a regular business. Think of it more as a native plant farm stand than a brick and mortar.

If anyone has questions, please let me know! And see our last post for our up to date inventory. Thanks! Happy planting!
