Have you ever changed this piece on your shower? If you are thinking about changing it then make sure you use Teflon tape and install it so it fits snug at the connection inside the wall. A loosely installed pipe or an install without the proper sealant/tape can cause major damage to your home. In this house the entire shower had to be removed as well as the drywall behind the shower, the subfloor, the drywall on the ceiling downstairs under the shower, and some of the framing members attached to the shower wall! A very unfortunate incident for the homeowner. If you are a landlord, you might want to specify that this piece should not be changed without written consent.
